Absolutely, which is why I'm not pushing things with her. Though, she does make changing their food and water a little difficult sometimes...
I actually picked up some mealworms today to try with her. I put the suet cage up a bit higher to provide greens and some apple, but she hasn't seemed...
Picked up the momma hen and six chicks from a friend this past weekend, so thought I'd share a photo of them in their new home. Momma is very protective and doesn't want me anywhere near them - she will puff up and charge me. So it is a slow process of going in the coop, sitting and tossing...
Yep, the chips are just going to sit for a couple weeks. Chicks aren't even going to be using the run for a while yet, so I have time to let them dry and also to haul them over. I also have nearly 4 acres of land with a good bit wooded, so can probably scrounge up all kinds of leaves and other...
Haha yes.. this blasted heat wave. We worked on the chicken coop/run all day Saturday and Sunday through the heat advisory. :( It's been averaging 92 all week lately.
Plan is to use the deep litter method with wood chips from the local tree trimming companies in the chicken run and pine...
Yea... I guess we will find out! I really hope not because it really levels off right around the coop, but it is a risk I suppose. It was the best spot to put the run given where the coop is, plus it is mostly shaded, which is a huge plus here in hot, hot, hot NC.
Thanks so much! I think...
Thanks all! Still have some work to do to have it completely ready, but the vast majority can be done with the chicks and momma in the coop/run while I work.
Yes, the roof is sloped slightly, optically it is difficult to see as the ground slopes the opposite way a little bit. Should be good...
Definitely not done yet, but have made some really good progress thus far - thanks to all for suggestions and advice.
I'm picking up my first group of momma plus her 6 chicks on Sat. We have another nest pending hatching that I'll pick up when they hatch as well. So at this point just trying...
Oh, wow, that's cool! I'm glad to know someone else out there has a coop that is more open/exposed (obviously predator-proof). All the coops I tend to see are completely enclosed.
So yes I don't think those roosts will remain. Plan is to put in a real door, cover the "windows" with hardware cloth and maybe some hinged covers that I could put down in bad weather. Will have to check on the roof itself. Floor is just the ground right now, but might be able to use some wood...
That's interesting, I didn't realize that they might not mind getting a little wet sometimes. I will need to look into deep litter for the run. And yes I'll make sure the run location isn't in a low spot.
Thanks for such great advice everyone!
I'm imagining all the rain we get here and how bad it would smell and how mucky it would be if I didn't cover the run.... Thinking that they would not enjoy being cooped up literally on the nasty weather days.
Thank you so very much for your reply! Appreciate the specifics for sure.
Seems as though I may want to roof the run, it's wet here.
Not too cold here, rarely get a dusting of snow, so the front may be good if I replace with hardware cloth. And yes there are holes up at the tops which will...
Hey all, I am new the site and am moving shortly to a home with a little space and a run-down chicken coop. I would like to fix it up and add on a nice sized run for my flock of around 8-10 that are currently in eggs sitting under a friend's hen.
Background info:
1) I'm in central North...
