How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

they are healing but one hasn't grown feathers back. this is what they looked like that day & she was the worst/ much worse than pic shows. I found the purple no peck lotion and dab it on the area. They look okay from what I can tell in the pictures. I also use peck no more and a spray that is...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Ugh. So not what I wanted to hear, but I agree, the problems are only with the older hens. That sucks. I am too attached to mine to kill any of them. I'll just continue to keep her in a separate coop with the rooster. They seem happy together.

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Interesting. I don't know what to tell you. I used the blu-kote stuff so that mine wouldn't continue to pick at that area. It's seemed to help. It was upsetting to keep mine separated, but all of my chickens have beautiful feathers now, and they all seem happier. I don't know if that's the...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Did you check them for mites or lice? I've read that people use Sevin or diatomaceous earth to dust the chickens & coops if they find lice. I also read that some people bathe them with flea shampoo. I've luckily never had this problem. From everything I've read though, it looks like bare necks...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Thanks! I think so too. They used to look so sick & scraggly, but I think they're both beautiful now!

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Thanks for the advice! Both girls have grown a lot of feathers since I've had them separated for about two months now! Bertha (the mean one) has a ton of feathers, and it's very obvious now that she is part silkie. She is still just as mean as ever though. She shares a coop with the rooster...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Haha, okay. I figured that Bertha was just taking a winter break from laying. I was hoping she would start laying again in spring. I don't know how old she is, so I was hoping that she wasn't just "done". Also, I had considered molt, but I wasn't sure because she doesn't look like she's missing...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Funny that you posted this. I now have Percy & Bertha separated from one another. They have been separated since Christmas. Bertha is living in the smaller coop with the rooster Goliath. They seem to be doing well together, although she has not laid an egg for several months. I think they are...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Thank you f Thank you for your kind words. I know it's not my fault. I just have a hard time giving up- especially on animals.

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

I know. I just feel crappy, like people think I haven't actually tried anything. And I'm actually really upset about the situation, so I guess I'm being touchy. I don't know. No. She isn't any better. I watched her peck a feather out of the roosters butt yesterday. I hope she doesn't keep it...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

This is super cute! Poor thing! Percy's feathers are finally growing back now that she's been staying in the other coop for the past 2 weeks. Her butt is still pretty bare, but I see quite a few little feathers just starting. I'm kind of excited about it. This will be the first time since I've...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

I'm not trying to be rude, but I've addressed all of these points in the numerous posts I've made in this thread. What you can see in the picture is less than half of that coop, but I agree- I still think it is small. When we got it Percy, Bertha, & another hen lived in it. The enclosed end is...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

I did. I just took them off of her on Sunday. She was still attacking the others even with them on. I posted photos & videos a couple of days ago.

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. It makes me so sad though because we rescued her & she finally looks so healthy. She's finally not terrified of people & I was so proud. I just can't keep her separate or let her terrorize the other chickens. I think she's pretty old & I'm pretty sure at this...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Well I watched Bertha pluck a feather out of Goliath's butt today & gobble it up. He didn't even flinch when she did it. His butt still looks pretty fluffy, so I'm hoping it was just jealousy since the other hens were all out & he was trying to get out with them. I feel like I'm being...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

While the peepers may have stopped Bertha from pecking out Percy's tail feathers (which I can't be entirely sure of due to the fact that they were separated most of the time), they did not stop her at all from bullying my other hens. She chased them & pinned them down any chance she got. She...

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

These chickens have at least five acres that they free range on every single day. They are only in the coop to lay eggs & to sleep. Even when it rains and snows, they are out, and have been for several months now.

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

Unfortunately by the time I got them they had already developed it as a habit (I think). If the peepers don't work, I'm going to try this concoction. Seems like it would work well. Thanks a lot!

How do you stop feather eating/ pecking?

I'm afraid that's the point we are getting to. We are getting a rooster on Sunday morning. I hope he can get her settled down. He's her last hope.
