Thanks, you're welcome. You can use sandpaper to smooth down roosts to eliminate burrs and splinters, same with ramps....two or three swipes will do it. Lowering roosts helps too.

I use duct tape instead of vet wrap. You can cut it into strips and use it like vet wrap. The gauze covering the hole will stay dry too, and you wont have to change it out for a couple of days. Duct tape cant be picked off by the bird. To remove the duct tape, use sharp scissors to carefully cut...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

There's no need to use Baytril nor any other antibiotics if the infection (bumble) has been completely removed, and proper dressings applied after surgery. There will be no swelling, no redness, no limping....no need to give oral meds nor injections.

Instead of vet wrap, use duct tape. Put it on the same way as vet wrap, not tight, strips between the toes. To remove it a couple of days later, you can peel it off or use scissors to cut it vertically down the leg. Be careful not to snip toes, you should be able to pull it off when you cut it...

Dont use tylan, it is for respiratory diseases. I dont recommend an antibiotic, it is not necessary if you remove the infection. See post #253 in this link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/303829/vet-suggestion-for-non-invasive-bumblefoot-cure/250

No. Bumblefoot is caused by a staph infection. If not treated and the infection gets to the legbone...game over, the staph infection then rapidly spreads throughout the chickens system, then death. GI bacterial infections are most likely ecoli. Sour crop could develop into a fungal problem...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

No swelling, no redness, no limping = no surgery. Just observe them and watch for any of the 3 things I mentioned. Then consider soaking and surgery.

If you properly got the infection out, swelling and redness should disappear soon after surgery. When you check the wound in a couple of days and there's redness and swelling, soak her foot in epsom salts warm water for 30 minutes. Then squeeze the heck out of the footpad while manipulating the...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Anesthesia is not needed for bumblefoot surgery. Chickens will sometimes flinch or pull their legs once the infection is removed when you're still digging around for infection. I usually use this as a sign that most or all of the infection has been removed.
