    Heat lights...neccessary ?

Quote: I have a night light for mine right now, just 15 watts. It's enough to see the food and water but not enough to stimulate them. Mine are on a very good and predictable sleep/wake pattern. They sleep mainly when it gets dark, but still eat and drink, and are very active during the day...

    Heat lights...neccessary ?

Rte.66_chicks : Will a ceramic heater keep the brooder as warm as a 250 watt heat lamp? Mine are in the garage, and it still gets pretty chilly at night-high 30s to mid 40s. Yes if you get the 250 watt ceramic they will be fine. I use a 165 watt for my rubbermaid brooder.

Absolutely, the ceramic screw fixture is a must. I love my ceramic 'bulbs'. Mine are 150 watt and seem to be perfect for a large rubbermaid type brooder. I was going to go with the 250 watt but I really do think it's overkill. However, my brooder room is at 70 degrees so if yours is cooler, a...

Actually, light 24/7 can contribute to picking. Some people also use infrared light. I really prefer the ceramic ones, though.

I have the ceramic heater you are familiar with, and it works great! Go for it!! I love having mine in natural light, but at night I do have a nightlight for the next couple days, just so they can find the food and water. It's a 25 watter and I'll probably decrease it to 15 watts in a few days...
