They did but it would be too much breeze on the birds in winter so we just closed them up to right above their heads when roosting. I was also worried the windows were too big to put hardware cloth on and deter a determined predator. I liked it, too, but thought it wasn't practical? We still...
Still a work in progress (I told DH he has to take that random blue piece of wood off the door!) but it's predator proof and everyone is laying and roosting on the bars at night (with a little help - first night I had to put all of them on the bars, 2nd night only half still didn't get it). The...
I'll post pics tomorrow but we've shored up the outside and now just need to replace the door (too much rot and gaps) and reconfigure the inside. DH still doesn't get why the nesting boxes are in a bad spot lol but I showed him aart's link and he liked the way that looked so going to attempt...
They're low and air coming in will blow over the birds when they're on their perches. I could have them on hinges so they swing down in the summer I guess but might be more work than it's worth.
Just on the side with the big windows, unfortunately. The windows are too big, so I'm planning to board them halfway up then add hardware cloth to the top. It is not air tight so it might be enough to leave the wood with gaps in between the boards up high and add hw cloth for protection.
I have an old litter box and I'm thinking of getting a few more to put under the roosting bars on that shelf (or another shelf haven't decided yet but I like the idea of it). Right now the chickens are in 2 prefab coops with the trays that come out so I would like something that comes out to...
I can bend it's just like I'd be crawling under the shelf, hitting my head on it, just seems awkward. I like the idea of having access outside but I don't want to cut into the wood any more than necessary. Should I put linoleum down on the wood floor?
So.. DH surprised me with the inside done. Not how I sure I would've done it this way but yay for new floor. Trying to think now where I can put the roosting bars. Also, I guess he thought the hens would go up the ramp and walk down the shelf to the preferred nesting boxes? Lol. I still have...
True. Might be only good halfway through. We have a bunch of corrugated plastic roofing from another project, maybe I'll just put that on. That way I can also add more of an overhang on the window side.
I looked again and it looks like it's just the outer pieces of wood all around the edge of the roof and maybe some of the frame pieces that frame the roof.
I think I can just take those outer shingles off and replace them and the outer edge of wood. Not sure what he has planned for the bottom. It's really heavy so we can't move it. We borrowed a lift to bring it here!
