At this point I'd probably install a web cam and see if I could catch the kids. That is ridiculous. *sigh*
Anyhow. Lost the gimpy chick -- it just gave out today for no discernable reason but it was never a feisty chick. Got 18 eggs in the 'bator now, but they're all EErs from a neighbor since...
Well, bad news was I only got 6 chicks from 36 eggs.
More bad news was that obviously the meat roosters had more fun than I expected them to and I got one feather footed and two naked necks from 6 chicks.
Even MORE bad news: The single Heritage RIR that hatched has a bum leg and though we're...
Oh man. As if yesterday's chick wasn't bad enough...the three today...two are black naked necks and ONE looks like the spittin' image of Goliath. I guess when the meat roosters got out for a 'few minutes' they partied harder than I thought. Good thing my other half has fallen in love with NNs.
The Aloha-ing has begun...My first RIR or Sussex X Goliath crosses are hatching and this is what I've got so far!
Wait a cotton pickin' minute. Those are FUZZY feet. Goliath's not feather footed...so either my 1/2 Cochin/1/2 RIR got to her, or my 1/2 Silkie/1/2 Easter Egger got to her. I'm...
Boy am I glad I put in a batch to incubate when I did...darn chickens went on egg strike the minute it snowed...which was the same time my internet went out :P Still not fixed. What I get for living in the back of beyond and being too cheap to drive into town more than once a week.
Anyway, my...
Wow, he's a beaut', as they say. I think he might actually be splash, but I love the feathered legs! We'll have to wait for Sommer to weigh in, but what the heck. He's got nice yellow legs and a nice upright straight comb...those are two of the requirements! :D At worst, you'd have some eatin'...
I would pay between 3-8 dollars a piece for day old chicks -- so really I don't consider that that bad price wise. There's also the self-sticky bubble wrap that seems to work well for some folks on here. I'm certainly willing to give it a try - or if you CAN ship chicks, I'd be more than happy...
Well, I certainly have designs but I have room if you want to ship me eggs at some point after the beginning of January. I'm going to clear out all my old RIR and Barred hens as soon as the pullets start laying. I've got room in my two solid coops...20 in the big run and 12 in the smaller and I...
Oh MAN.
My internet goes down for a few days and all hell breaks loose!
We have GOT to get some of your hatching eggs (from any of the flocks) to me in the spring. Just in case.
All I have to worry about are freakin' coyotes.
Oh, and it looks like Helga might have yellow legs too - bonus!
I think right now my plans for my two breeding pens for next year are this:
Goliath will stay with the RIRs and my funky EEr cross (I think she's got dominant white + splash going on), and probably Helga (speckled Icelandic)...
Wow! Some really "egg"citing news there, Sommer!
I have a little news myself...
I brought my little Speckled Sussex cockerel home tonight -- he's only 3 months old - so cute! And because I didn't want him to be lonely, I got 2 girlfriends for him. An Easter Egger and a speckled Icelandic...
If it wasn't so darn cold here I'd do that. But I doubt they'd survive shipping between the post office and the deep freeze. I'll have to wait till spring!
Alright. I'll bug you closer to spring because right now it's too cold to get shipped eggs. I live 30 miles from the Canadian border and there's a good chance the dang things would FREEZE before I could get them out of the mail. :/
Sure! I will have decided on and culled out my layer flock by then, so I'll have room again. I can rotate the pens to put the smaller layers in the smaller pen because they won't need the warmth that the big coop provides them in our bitter winters. And I'd be willing to try some shipped eggs...
