    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

AWESOME! So we DO have a results post... and that was just a week. Wonder how much it would affect it if you fed the whole period. Might aught to be careful on this..... Too strong an herb, or fed over too long might prove to be potent

*ahem* Oregano, please don't start eliminating states for this experiment.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Personally I would start off with sage, it's a good all purpose herb, followed by oregan and/or basil. Simple common and cheap all. buy in bulk from some discount or bent and dent store and dump it in. Also if you REALLY feel enthusiastic do some research into some of the herbs that really pack...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

We've had that discussion.... But I don't have meat birds at the moment and the handful of people that are trying it haven't reported back in yet. The theory seems sound, we know that wild game picks up the "gamey" taste from the variety of plants they consume, also I have few chicks herbs...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

LoL. THAT would be my luck. Have some horrific earthnadofirequake decimate my flock, and those chicks be the only onesleft standing.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Make sure that you are accounting for the fact that the feed is wet when you feed them. It make take up the same amount of space, but there is more water in the FF, so it should equal out to less of the dry stuff

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That is EXACTLY how I started mine out. Bakers yeast, plus th ACV, of course in my case it was impatience rather than lack of success ont he ACV's part. Also, regarding the comments about leaving the uneaten out, or just adding the fresh ontop of it..... I guess it never even occured to me that...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

This actually makes a good bit of sense, as i live in the Southeast and out winter temps are unpredictable at best, and flat out random at worst, I have no idea how mine will take to it over the winter. I'll see. As always, the chicken barameter is my rule, if they are eating it with enthusiasm...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Heh, heh, heh. Well I use a metal strainer scoop to dip mine out with, you know the kind you buy at walmart for $2, with the two tabs on them for placing over the mouth of a jar? Yeah those. I'm working on my 3rd one since I started fermenting around May. Every so many weeks I go out and the...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The best part, so far, appears to be that I don't actually need all THAT much alfalfa int he mix to get the desired effect, and given the cubes ability to reconstitute themselves and drink several times their weight in water, that 50lb bag may just see me through the winter since i'm only...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Yes, the bag of cubes was much cheaper than the bags of mini pellet feed I normally get. I may just start buy the bags grains loose straight out and keep only enough actual feed to have a scoop or two out just for something to peck at

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

So, I was intrigued by the mention of using alfalfa cubes to provide a fermented green. I purchased a 50lb bag from my feed store and embarked on an experiment. Not having any reference as to how much to try, I added a large double handful of the cubes to my 5g FF bucket. 24 hours later, and I...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The length of time the grain needs would depend onthe amount of grain fermenting, and the strength of the cultures the grain is being added to. Someone starting out with a whole fresh batch of grain each time; yep, that might just be alcohol after only 12-24 hours. This is why I ferment in a...
