Having trouble getting my humidity up on day 18. Both trays filled and sponges laid
In trays. Another flat sponge laid on top of the tray area. Soaked. Vent half closed. Any suggestions?
I put the bator down on a fluffy towel on the counter in case of "jumpers", lol. But you should be able to quickly gather them into a box or basket (AND get all the gross egg shells out) and put the lid back on.
Without a hydrometer, a good rule of thumb is to use your smallest bathroom...
I have 26 going into lockdown soon too. Can't say enough good about the steamy bathroom method! You can get those babies/broken eggs out every 6 hours or so, and it really helps make room.
Last hatch, earlier this month, I must have opened 10 times over the course of the hatch. Waited till...
it really works well. i just had my hatch and those that were pipping or zipping at the moments i took fluffy chicks out, i swear, SPED UP and hatched faster. i think it was the extreme humidity in the bathroom...just made all those exposed edges and cracks of the membrane/shell completely...
Oh, I didn't think you were. :)
Just saying how I move mine out a few at a time so it doesn't get too crowded. I also take the eggshells out when I take out the chicks in the steamy bathroom...really helps make room!
i started with 25, took one out for infertility, and still have 24. after taking dividers out, i still had room for my biggish hydrometer. i do have five small (pullet) eggs in there, though i also have 4 big old marans eggs too. i hatched 23 of 24 when i did my last hatch at the montessori...
i thought me getting 25 in there was stuffing it. do you have a lot of pullet eggs or? i don't know what either of those breeds' eggs really look like but i guess i assumed BOs would be big! :)
OK, an update--have had RH at 70% for 4 hours now. HERE"S WHAT I DID (besides ALL the efforts listed above, including the humidifier right next to it.)
Because I had to put SO much water in the bottom of the bator, it was leaking out the four holes on the bottom. I put a thick towel under...
Happy you had a great hatch. I've cut up 3 sponges now and they are laid all in the bottom of the bator, plus an extremely absorbent cloth. I've hatched hundreds of birds in the past--not my first rodeo. Those of us with extremely low humidity aren't imagining the issue, I assure you.
Moved to a bedroom and kicked heat on in there (will just have to bite the bullet for a couple days on $$). Placed a nice new humidifier right beside it. 64% humidity.
To get that number...I went in and brought the sponges out of the water as much as a i could (not a lot of room under the...
I am considering the humidifier too, but my problem is that the warm part of my home is the living room, where the fireplace is. Every other area gets cold (bedrooms we only heat at night and close off during day...bathrooms have NO heat and are frigid unless i keep door open to living...
I am an experienced hatcher and have cut up sponges on both sides of trough, with a thick washcloth laid on that. Having trouble getting humidity above 60-ish for some strange reason. this house has wood heat and an extreme lack of humidity, is all i can guess. last place, where i had 5 or 6...
