    Hawks....

A quick search if the internet produced only one instance where an individual was sentenced for killing a hawk. One guy admitted to killing a bald eagle and 20 hawks and although paid a heavy fine, he did not see any jail time...

    Hawks....

They were all killed on the ground and ripped apart, feathers everywhere. The hawk kept returning to feast on the carcass' before I got a chance to find and bury them. They were all in the woods in the underbrush and were hard to spot. The EE was the same color as the tress and the Barred Rocks...

Here's our rooster. He may have saved some others from being attacked for all we know however we did lose one full size EE hen about a month ago which was surprising. The other hens were hiding in our barn and under deep cover. It took awhile to get them to come out. The rooster was going crazy...

But they are a problem since they have killed 4 chickens and attacked the one bantam we have (who managed to survive with a huge wound). We don't have any Red Tail hawks that I have ever seen. Also no owls.

I know what you mean. I'm glad they make it so you know they are nearby since otherwise they are so stealthy.

Here's what our chickens see (and hear) ALL day long.

    Hawks....

Thanks. Since he's ALWAYS around it isn't that hard. The other day he was circling about 20' above my head for at least ten minutes. He is a beautiful bird. I can't understand why they didn't make their nest closer to the pond or the hundreds of acres in the back rather than up close to the road...

Sorry to hear that. It takes so long to replace a good egg laying hen. I'm surprised the hawk took out your rooster too. Must have been a female hawk. Here's the one that terrorizes our chickens although they have been off limits since they are in lock down except for supervised free range...

    Hawks....

I didn't witness the attack but I did see the hawk sitting in a tree about 10' high above the freshly killed hen. I've never seen a red tailed hawk around here but we do have more than one of the red shouldered hawks. The hawks have built their nest within 50' of the coop. If there was a red...

Here he is with what looks like a mouse. He circles the coop at a very low level and isn't much afraid of anything at this point. I hope he continues to find mice.

Don't be fooled. This one killed a full size EE hen three weeks ago with the roo right there. It attacked our bantam also but she hunkered down in the briar and the hawk was scared off before she was finished off. She escaped with a huge gash on her back. They are all in lock down until the...

    Hawks....

Interestingly enough one of the hawks attacked our bantam two weeks ago. She escaped with a huge wound just above her tail and a back full of missing feathers. She never missed a day laying an egg though....she's one tough girl. At the time I thought it was a random attack but now that I see the...

    Hawks....

Here's one of the two hawks I have seen since yesterday. Looks like the nest building is coming along nicely. There also has been an increase in crow activity as well as robins. I've seen the robins chasing the hawk in a large group. They make a lot of noise trying to scare away the hawk. If any...

    Hawks....

The hawks are very active right now here in MA due to the unusually warm May like weather. This one killed our nice EE hen on Sunday afternoon. She was in the dense underbrush when attacked from above and only about 50' from the coop and run. It was hard for me to even get in there to bury her...
