I had dumped some DE on anthills this past spring and it seemed to have little to no effect, which is why I too was skeptical about DE. But the bzillions of microscopic white bugs crawling up our walls drove me to revisit my DE beliefs...fingers crossed!
If I wasn't laughing, I'd be crying. But, I did not share your misfortune of housing all of those extra "pets" in my house, although I very nearly did keep some crumbles inside. My "visitors" were mainly isolated to my garage. You deserve a sympathy card with money in it.
Ok, forgive my ignorance, but what are the benefits to transferring the feed to the 5 gallon buckets? I am just wrapping up my first year of chicken ownership and still need to learn all of these things :D
For some reason, I had to order it online from my TSC. They were also sold out of the chicken boots I wanted, so boo to them. :bun
@aart I am so sorry to hear about your temporary relapse in dust-watching. Death to the invaders! ☠
I finally got my food-grade DE earth today and probably mixed in enough to deter fourteen generations of mites. Here's hoping for letting my membership in the dust-watchers club lapse. Thanks again for the advice (and support)! :)
I'm ordering a bag of food grade DE today. But, until it arrives, this is my current setup with the new bag of FL sitting in a pan of non-food grade DE. I don't know if it will work, but at least it makes me feel better. Dust-watchers club UNITE!
I second this question - what is a good sub? I hated to do it, but went to TSC today and bought a *small* bag of purina flock raiser, but only because that was all they had. Would love to know other, more reliable feed options that aren't renown for housing all of these extra "pets".
@aart Do you just dump the DE in the bottom of the bin and set the bag on top? I do have some DE, but it is not food grade. Not even sure where to find food grade?
Oh no, I'm so sorry! not ok...We are still trying to win our garage (and everything in the garage) back from these things. I thought about moving! I don't think anyone with the clean freak gene can even deal :he
@Overo Mare were you able to conquer these things in your house? How many days went by before they were completely gone? I am dealing with the same issue right now, it's a definite yuck.
