Thanks guys, the towels are actually my utility (cleaning) towels. Couldn't think of what else to use so you could see all the different colors of chicks. I think I might give in and let them keep all the silkie and polish chicks, we only have layers right now so it might be fun for them to...
Wow what a busy weekend! We have our final tally... We started with 42, two clears and one quitter (blood ring at day 10 candle), so 39 went into lock down and we ended up with 30 chicks! I think for our first hatch this was an awesome result! We are so excited, my girls got to watch many of...
I don't have the plug out, should I have it out? I don't know how I would keep the humidity up with it out. I put the cloth right along the side so I can get to it with barely opening the lid. Thank you for your advice it has been really helpful.
Thanks, we are so nervous with this being our first hatch. But also very excited. I hope if all the chicks hatch we can find good homes quickly or my husband is going to kill me. We agreed no more chickens until next year. Now we have 39 that have made it to day 19! We definitely were not...
Thank you, I took a washcloth and got it wet and rolled it up so it would fit along the edge of the incubator and it came up to 62%, will this be enough or should I stick one more in? I am afraid since this brought it up about 10% that if I add another it will be to high.
Yeah, we locked down 39 eggs last night. I do have a question though. I filled all the trays in our hovabator 1588. The humidity is reading 52%, I know it should be more around 60 to 65%. Should we mess with it, or hope that when the chicks start to hatch it will come up?
Hi everyone! I have a question for the more experienced than I. This is our first try with incubating and so far (knock on wood) we are having great success. We started with 42 and have 39 still growing as of day 16. We did a full candle and could see everyone of them moving. So we are on day...
We just did our complete candle yesterday, it was day 10 for us. We started with 42 eggs, found one blood ring and two clears. So we are at 39 and have one marked with a question mark, really dark and spotted egg, very hard to see. Looks to have good veining, but we couldn't find the dark spot...
Thank you all for the replies. My youngest daughter is in bed a good hour before it is dark enough to just turn off of the lights and candle where it is, and the reason we have taken on this project is so that the girls can see where all those cute fluffy chicks come from. I like the idea of...
Hi fellow mother's day hatchers, I have a question. We are new to incubating, this is our first try. I am wondering what the best procedure is for taking them out and candling and putting them back in the incubator? We have 42 eggs set and we did a spot check of about six random eggs from...
Thank you! This is our first try with the incubator so we don't really know what were doing but I figure with all that I have read on this site and all of the wonderfully helpful people on this forum I thought we would go for it. Some of the barnyard mix eggs are dirtier then I would have...
Here is the pic of our incubator. And a big thank you to all that replied to my first post. Arielle (I hope I spelled that right) thank you for the link.
I would like to join. I didn't know their was a hatch-a-long. My daughters and I just set our very first batch of eggs last Saturday (4-21-12). We have 24 mixed eggs which are RIR and SLW hens with BCM rooster, and 17 barnyard mix and 1 mystery duck egg for a total of 42. We bought a Hovabator...
