I would like to have some vaccinated seramas for him. If not, I guess I could try japanese bantams or dutch. I'm not having any luck with my OEGBs, even vaccinated, I only have one left out of 4 :(
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that can't get a decent hatch with seramas :(
Thanks, he is the best little rooster :) He is spoiled rotten and loves all the attention :) ..and we love him right back :) Now, if I could only find him some vaccinated women :) I've tried hatching...haven't had any luck with seramas :(
Just have to share one more pic...
I can't believe it!!! When it rains, it pours. I have 4 kids, my oldest is 25. She is the only one that ever broke anything...her wrist. Now, this! Knee problems are hereditary in my family so it's no shock that two out of 4 have those...but, men rarely have subluxing patella problems...I...
Anyone who has been 'touched' by this disease knows the heartache that it leaves behind. Those who haven't don't know the watching and waiting that goes on....and just when you think you are safe, wham...it rears its ugly head again. Thanks everyone for listening. It's been a rough month...
Right now, I have 13 left out of the original 37 that I got last year for Mother's Day. I have since hatched and vaccinated some chicks of my own and have some chicks that I purchased/gifted that were vaccinated. Those total 17 hatched and 13 purchased...some vaccinated, some not. I haven't...
They have no clue that I am stressing...but thanks for the reminder :) I train Akitas and trust me, I'm really good at hiding my true feelings...plus, I have until the end of summer to find out what is going to happen. I just take one day at a time and care for them to the best of my ability :)...
I have read that the paralysis with Marek's is transient...meaning that it can come and go. I've had birds get 'better' only to have the paralysis come back with a vengeance and they die shortly thereafter. I have a little pullet right now that I have been treating since the end of September...
There are days when I just want to run screaming!!!!! I have a smaller coop that I had 7 chickens in, they were all vaccinated at the hatchery. I have never had them near the original 'carriers'. All were strong and healthy. 2 silkies, 1 polish (the one that I sent you a pic of), 1 bantam...
The vaccine is only 90% effective and it is the only way to fight this disease. Just like any other vaccination, some still get it but a milder version, some still get it and it's fatal. It does seem like through our discussions that the vaccine is worthless but it isn't. I haven't lost as...
Right now, I have vaccinated everyone and plan on revaccinating...I feel like I'm a broken record...I've said this same thing on so many posts. You and I are usually right there together trying to learn as much as we can. I was on the thread when your last little polish got sick...it was...
I don't know about the wild birds but mine got it from somewhere....and, to the best of my knowledge no one else that I know has had problems. We live downwind from several farms and it is very windy. I won't discount anything. I was more thinking that infected feathers could be blown in the...
I really think Marek's can be spread much further than that by wind...it can carry feathers and dander far and wide. I worry about any neighbors with chickens downwind of me :( There is not much I can do about it though.
I've been told that it doesn't take much to infect a bird...especially...
Squirrels cannot get Marek's as it does not cross from birds to mammals. I would be worried about rabies though and dispatch it as quickly as possible. You could then call the game warden and they could test for possible rabies. Rabies does not have to be vicious...there is a 'dumb' rabies...
Thanks for all the kind words...like you, I've spent days crying. I sat down and sobbed when my tiny serama pullet started showing symptoms
As for the barred NN...as you can see, he takes his job as head roo very seriously :) These babies all hatched on Dec 4th and were vaccinated...
Cringe if you must but I will continue to try and treat my birds. I am no more of a risk to others than the person who culls their birds. The virus is still in their soil and on their other birds....
Have you ever had them tested and a definitive diagnosis? I have had no success with any recovering. I have lost 21 birds. So far, no successful recoveries :( Now, my little serama pullet, who just successfully hatched a couple babies, is sick. Totally different symptoms....she is fat but...
I agree, stress is the number one factor. However, the silkies I purchased at a week old and the original loss was weeks before I picked up the roo from NY. So, I don't believe he is the root cause. I'm starting to wonder if someone carried Marek's into the feed store and infected the babies....
