Embarrassed and sadened. What actually happened?

Good thoughts. I will be checking for rat holes tomorrow. The only problem is that I could still have them, even without the holes since the coop door is always open so that the chickens can come and go as they need. I guess I need to get some of those blocks that someone mentioned, just to...

I call them my '"girlies". They are so much fun to watch. In the summer, they love the wide blade grass that grows along the edge of the run. They can't get to it because of the chicken wire, but I pluck it and they all crowd in and take it from me. They can't get enough of it.

Wouldn't the others gang up on the rat and try to eat him? Seems odd. The coop door is always open as it opens up into the run. I always thought that chickens would eat anything small that tries to get into the run. I'm still learning with all of this....

Thanks, I appreciate it. I know it sounds goofy, but I love my hens. Just as my wife! :) She teases me about it all the time.

OK. I'll look tomorrow and see what I can find. My coop is VERY small - only about 4x4 - enough to fit four hens but no more. Dumb question but are rats just as active in cold weather outside?

We live in town, but I suppose it is still possible. However, I've had these hens since last March, so I'd wonder why predators are waiting until now (except for colder weather?) to get them. I haven't seen any signs of rats, but then again, who knows? They were fine up until this incident...

I feel terrible! She was most likely the bottom of the crew. She always hung back and waited until the others had first dibs at the food. Poor girl. I feel like a murderer! Guaranteed that I won't allow it to happen again.

Honestly, I don't think they were more than 3 days without. The last time i checked the food, there was enough to last them probably for a day.

THe coop is enclosed with chicken wire and there was no evidence of anything tampering with the wire at any place that I could see.

Good evening everyone. I hesitated to post this but let me give you the quick version so that you can give me some feedback. Last week I got really busy for about four days, and with the change in time and it getting dark earlier and me getting home in the dark, I forgot to check on my girls...
