On Friday, 6 chicks hatched, and on Saturday 2 more hatched.
Only one didn't make it, though it was fully formed.
I'd say 8 chicks out of the 9 eggs that went into lockdown is pretty good!
Sometime I'll share photos, once I get the photos downloaded.
Wow! That was a fast one.
I don't have any chicks yet, but just a few seconds ago, I heard loud peeping coming from the hatcher.
I woke up at 3:30am from a dream about chicks hatching again - and found the one that has pipped on the wrong end had pipped a short line & was trying to push off a...
Oh, I'm not going to mess with it for awhile. One of my previous hatches from 2 years ago, I'm pretty sure I had one that pipped in the "wrong place" also. I can't remember what happened with that chick, but I'm trying to not open the incubator this time at all once they start pipping &...
Yay! Isn't so thrilling?
When I saw your photo, I just had to check mine.
Guess what? I have my first pip too!
But, it's on the wrong end, so hopefully it makes it out ok.
Nice little brooder there - I have to build some broody coops this year, so I might borrow your design. I have some similar but bigger, and I really like the top hinged lid.
But, I might have to make a few with side doors, so I can stack them! Hoping I get lots of broodies this year, and if...
Candled & moved the 9 remaining eggs to the Cooler 'Bator yesterday morning. They hadn't lost enough moisture yet, even though I've been doing a dry hatch.
Probably due to adding "fresh" eggs to the incubator (& double-stacking), resulting in less surface area of the eggs to be exposed.
I...
Ha Ha! I've thought of playing music out there, but not for that purpose!
I think the low fertility was the combination of extremely cold temperatures and not enough roosters were with the hens.
I have plenty of roosters, but they were all in the "bachelor pad" together for the winter, except...
I forgot to give you an update on my "Friday the 13th Hatch a Long".
Monday morning (2/23), I candled again & removed all 39 clear / infertile eggs out of the original 48 eggs I'd set.
The good news is the 9 embroys are developing quite nicely.
So, while I'm not thrilled that all those eggs were...
First, you've got to wait until a hen decides she's going to go broody. Can't force a hen to, though keeping many eggs (real or fake) in the nesting box does seem to help them along.
Though having a breed that often goes broody helps, I've even had non-broody breeds such as a buff Leghorn, two...
Candled again yesterday, and 8 of the eggs have veins, one I'm not sure about but it's darker than the clear ones.
There was one that was quite active, as I could see the embryo pulsing and moving around - so cool!
There's a few more I'll wait to remove, but yesterday, I was able to replace...
Well, you may have more success with your shipped eggs than mine.
I couldn't wait any longer & candled Friday morning.
I lost count of how many were clear. Out of 47 eggs set, there's only about 7 that are veining, with a few more ?-able ones.
And I've incubated eggs before, so I know what they...
I only checked a few of the eggs quickly, but I'll wait until day 7 or 8 to candle them all.
I forgot that I had lowered the Genesis 1588's thermostat last hatch, so I had to reset it to 99.5*.
Since the room it's in isn't that warm (mid 60's), I have the incubator covered with towels to help...
Yes, I set a batch of eggs 2/13 early in the morning. They're a "test hatch" from my Catskill Homesteader breeding project.
It's the first time I've incubated eggs this early in the year, usually I wait until it's warmer.
Thankfully, we have a few days in the upper 20's and low 30's.
But, it's...
