    People are always too quick to blame the heat lamp for troubles. I've read of chicks chilling and dying using the heat pad because they don't know to get under it, or are too weak. I doubt the heat lamp heat itself was the problem as the OP said they have successfully used one before.

    Than I would suspect they got too hot. Just another question, are you brooding in the house? Teflon pans can be poisonous too if over heated.

    How hot was it under your heat lamp? Also check your bulb to make sure it isn't shatter resistant. Those are coated with Teflon which is deadly.
