    The black Australorp chicks we have are getting big at just a little over 4 weeks old. How old would they need to be put out in the chicken pen would you say? Have them in a smaller area now to keep them warm at night but they are about to out grow it. Live near the northern Kentucky border

    Had planned to make fryers of 3 roosters but may just make all 4 of them fryers.

    Okay , thanks. We have 20 4 week old australorps chicks. 16 are hens, 4 roosters. We had them several years ago and they got old and had to cull them out. Great egg producers. Had one big rooster with 14 hens, got a dozen eggs many days ,butvhad periods with only a few a day.

    I have a general question. Some of the old timers when I was young always said you need a rooster around to help keep hens laying more consistently, any opinions?
