The idea around the coconut oil is that it moisturizes the membrane without making it wet so that it stays pliable and does not stick to the little chick. P.S I love the idea of 'dirt keeping any eye in the membrane', dont you just hate the auto correct :gig
I dont think you missed it. I think that the higher humidity just caused the chicks to be a little larger than 'ideal' so they couldn't turn when they should have.
OK, I'm going to say lay the malpositioned ones flat, pip side up. goose the humidity with nice warm water and close the bator asap. These little ones may take a bit longer to zip. The membrane may need a little coconut oil or vaseline to stay moist.
You can leave her in there either until she is dry and fluffy or for a while longer if you have others mid hatch and dont want to open the bator to get her out. Besides she will encourage the others to get on with hatching. She can be in the bator for up to 48 hours thanks to the yolk she just...
16 more!! Sheesh, I wish I had your supplier. I only purchased 6, got 8 had 3 totally scrambled, and I mean scrambled, when I opened them there was just broken yolk and white. :( So I have 5 left that are progressing but like I said a couple with bad saddles. But on the upside, my BLRWs are...
Aww, she's exhausted, and I dont know how much experience you have with chicks but they have this wonderful habit of falling asleep where they stand so they can be upright and running one minute and flat on their faces fast asleep the next. Make sure you have nutri drench vitamins in their...
Oh, I just love this part :love:love:love:love:love Well done, well done!!! Congratulations, now you just have to come up with a fabulous name for her (hopefully!!). OK so how about chick no. 1? Anything new?
Absolutely, so helpful. I know you and I have hatches going on at the moment and I have marked/numbered all the eggs, done my chart, and I am determined to keep really good notes on the pip/zip times. I have a couple of CCL shipped eggs that have the worst saddles I have seen but the babes are...
Remember to update your profile with your location on this beautiful planet so folks know how to help if you need help or have questions that involve your immediate environment. Tomorrow will bring chicks to you. Good night!
This can be the most agonizing part of hatching... the waiting..... and waiting.... Sometimes they can pip and zip and be out within a hour or so, and sometimes it can take a day. However as my friend, WVduckchick will tell you, once the zip starts it should be very quick. If it stops for a...
No disagreement at all! I incubate upright most of the time due to most of my eggs being shipped but I take out the upright turner and lay everyone down for hatch. There is a poster on here who hatches masses of eggs upright and they had a pic. of the chicks tumbling down over the other eggs...
I thought so too, I wondered if maybe it was just a mark on the egg, but here's hoping:fl. The OP has already put the egg on its side, should she put it back in the carton? I totally defer to your good judgement. Ooops never mind. She just responded that she put it back.
I would add a warm wet sponge, I use a new one cut in half to avoid any contamination issues. It is just a bit quicker to slip a sponge in than to take the lid off to add water if that is what you have to do with your incubator. I think getting it up to about 65 - 70% would be ideal. If you...
:celebrateYay, just exactly where it should be...... there is an egg down next level and to the right that looks like it may also have a pip. Unsure about that obviously, it may just be a mark on the egg. Anyway, it all looks good. You may want to think about moving the pipper onto a flatter...
Firstly, take a nice deep calming breath. Now freak out.... no, no just kidding. Did it pip in the right end of the egg? In other words, in the air cell end or is it low down on the side somewhere? Don't do anything for a while. They can take a day or so to zip so don't panic if not much...
Please don't beat yourself up. I know that it doesn't make any difference to have folks tell you that, you feel awful anyway. We have all done this stuff, and then there's me who has had several botched hatches and done similar things, solely through thinking that I could out smart Mother...
I have read that an incubation that has had high humidity throughout tends to grow chicks that are larger than normal and are therefore unable to turn correctly when the time comes. Please correct me if this is not valid information.
