Little Darla walked Monday and Tuesday and I really thought we were winning- 3 steps actually. But on T and W I noticed her crop wasn’t emptying and she didn’t want to eat. She wasn’t bright eyed anymore. I euthanized her myself last night which I know was best for her but my heart is broken and...

Acyclovir is oral or topical in the US. Thank you- I’ll check out the other thread. It was mentioned In an article on PoultryDVM with the dosage. It’s used to treat shingles as well which is a pretty horrible blistery rash that can can chronic pain. In people it doesn’t have as much impact on...

Have any of you tried human antivirals for herpes on your chickens with Mareks (acyclovir (Zovirax) or Valcyclovir? I’m thinking of this too late but I saw some studies where tumor formation was diminished. I use them for cold sores. My vet never mentioned it. Thanks.

She is in a hammock thing but she doesn’t like it. Her bestie spends the day with her. I take her outside daily. She’s happiest in the afternoons when I have her out. I have her with me for about 5 hours each night. If i hold up her body she walks her legs up my body. No matter how this ends I...

Thanks again everyone for all of your help and support. Yes, I’m Under the belief that you gotta try even though my friends said to just buy a new chicken :-(. I’m headed home on my lunch break now to feed her. The vet gave me subQ fluids so that’s helping too. She gets so frustrated because...

Thanks everyone for all of the Information. It’s quite devastating and there is so much information. Some articles say it’s not very common in backyard flocks. Others say it’s ubiquitous. I’ve seen some “cure” their bird only for it to get sick later and necropsy show Mareks. If sweet Darla...

You think even with over a year in between Mareks would still be in the flock? I guess I find it strange that my vaccinated chick would get sick but none of my other unvaccinated girls got sick last summer with the first sick one. I started my flock last April 2017 and Storm died August 2017...

I read it was 95% effective in studies? Is that not true? My vet said vaccinated birds rarely get symptoms but can be carriers?

She was a rescue Silkie named Storm. She had what appeared to be a heat stroke (it was 100 degrees) but then what I honestly thought was Mareks. Couldn’t hold her neck up, unilateral paralysis with attempted walking (dragging her leg). She wouldn’t eat or drink so I tube fed her for 2 weeks and...

Yes thank you. I will send her if that happens. I’m cautiously optimistic. I said I’d never go to these measures again after losing my first chicken but I’m a sucker for sickness (I’m a nurse). Thanks for your help.

I hope so. The avian expert my vet consulted is director of the Texas A&M Veterinary medical diagnostic lab. I’m not sure that diagnosis explains all of her symptoms but he said he didn’t think it was Mareks.

My vet is treating her for enterococcus which gets in the spine and causes leg symptoms. He spoke to some avian experts and this is the recommendation so far. They really do not think Mareks. No meningitis and not related to head pecking. Enterococcus cecorum is treatable initially but efficacy...

3 videos. She’s trying to use legs today to lift herself up. She hadn’t been doing that. Eating much better the last 2.5 days...appetite was decreased initially. She’s also lifting her head a lot more.

Thank you. The vet posted her case to a national avian consult board. She’s so bright eyed and talks a lot so I feel I have to keep trying. She has a big appetite. She tried to fly when she sees her friends. I got 4 girls at the same time and the others are fine. Darla was doing great and then...

I’ve spent the last week caring for her and researching. My fear has been Mareks. My hope is it’s not. Thank you.

I’m trying to post a video and even at 4 seconds it’s saying too large? The vet and everything I’ve read said Mareks is asymmetrical paralysis. He said her legs aren’t paralyzed they are hypertonic (spastic and rigid). She can flap both wings. She’s moving her neck fine to eat.

She was vaccinated for Mareks. From my understanding Mareks is usually asymmetrical paralysis usually of the leg and wing (often presents as split legs). The tumors are on the sciatic nerve which gives it the asymmetrical presentation. She can move her legs, flap her wings and also use her neck...
