Awwww. So cute. I bet they loved being outside. :) Mine haven't had a chance to go outside yet. It's still too cold here. :( I can't wait for it to get a little warmer.
My ducklings have to "taste" their new bedding too. (Only when the size/texture of the bedding changed. Not every time I clean it out). I'm pretty sure they ate some but after they realized it wasn't food they stopped messing with it. It didn't seem to hurt them.
I just went to Tractor Supply and found a really fine/thin pine shaving. A big bag is $5.99. This stuff is amazing. If you can find it, I recommend it.
Here's a thought... I don't know what other people use but... I got some pine shavings from Walmart when I ordered my ducks. It was a small bag for hamsters and stuff. It was kind of soft shavings. They were thin and not very hard. When I ran out I went to Orcheln's and got a big bag of pine...
Just to give you an idea... Here's a pic of my 5 ducklings plus 9 chicks at 2 days old (top) and a pic of just my 5 ducklings at 3 weeks old (bottom). See how fast they outgrow their brooder? :)
