    Chicken Breed Focus - Campine

When I had Scout (my golden from the hatchery) she would fly more than the others. After our first snow, she flew from the gate to the run almost to the shoveled patio, and it is about 75 feet. She didn't care for the snow AT ALL, and that first winter, we had it on the ground for a couple of...

I love your dedication to the breed. I'm looking forward to their chatty little selves running around in the yard bossing everyone around.

I knew someone was crowing, and this morning, I caught this little one doing it. BOY.

Ah ha. Found the little rascal. She/he had a duplicate teal legband (but on the other leg). I'm thinking cockerel here. That would be 8 possible pullets and 3 cockerels and 2 undetermined right now if @Wisher1000 and I are right (she is closer than I am, I'm sure).

LOL back at ya. I have the enthusiasm, I just don't have the room for a serious breeding program. I'm trying to figure out a way to keep 4 or 5 as a breeding group. Some of that will depend on how they get along with the English Orpingtons in my newer coop/run. If they all get along, I can...

Thanks for the input. I'll keep watching. I put the legbands on today when the chick crowed and I couldn't catch it to band it. Now when he crows (and he will tomorrow morning -- he went on for an hour today), I'll note the color and we are good. You know me too well for someone I only know...

My babies at 3 weeks (well, all but one of them -- I can't figure out who I missed) They are losing feathers and look pretty rough.. Comments? Pretty sure this one is female. What do you all think? This is a really small (compared to the others) chick. I think this one (with the...

Quote: He was so gentle with them when he was butchering. He clearly loves his birds -- sitting there with one in his lap stroking it. Thank you so much for the link. It really demonstrates the difference from Campines.

Thanks. I thought maybe it was a technical term I hadn't come across.

Final hatch numbers were 13 of the 15 Campine eggs from @Wisher1000 hatched. I had to help 3 of them at one point or another, so those 3 may be weaker, time will tell. The little blonde in front is one of the Breda Fowl chicks as are the two up front, but the Campines are obvious by their...

The adult birds look a great deal alike. I know that they have widely different standards but the color distribution is quite similar. When I saw the Fayoumis at the Wichita zoo (in the farm area), I thought they were Campines. I think of them as leopard spotted.

Nothing quite like a pile of babies to make the day brighter. These are the results of the eggs that @Wisher1000 shipped me 3 weeks ago. She sent 20 eggs. 15 were viable at 10 days (shipping damage, we think). Over the last 2 days (day 20 and 21) I've hatched 12 Campine babies and 5 of my...

Yes, she is an enabler, no question. I have a friend here in kansas @Chicken Danz who is an enabler, too. Either that or she wants everyone to love chickens as much as she does.

My Campine eggs from @Wisher1000 are pipping (a day early). Of the 15 Campine eggs in the incubator 7 have pipped. One is in the process of zipping. Updates will come tomorrow. Maybe with pictures. fingers crossed

    Chicken Breed Focus - Campine

Just a quick update to my Campine quest. @Wisher1000 (aka "the enabler") sent me eggs (half way across the country) about 11 days ago. I did my 10 day candle yesterday, and 15 of the 20 eggs are developing. Of the 5 that aren't, 3 had air cell issues on arrival and 1 wasn't fertile. Boy...

Quote: Yeah, I know. Wouldn't want to waste all that heat on empty egg space. I'm dying here not being able to candle those eggs. But. I'm NOT going to open that incubator. It is stable, and all I'm doing is adding 10cc of water (syringe though aquarium tubing) once or twice a day depending...

Quote: LOL you can say that again. She has already given me tons of really valuable advice about hatching shipped eggs. I am going to be in so much trouble if all of those eggs hatch!! I have 8 English orpington eggs in there, and a buyer for any Jubilee chicks that hatch, and 6 Breda Fowl...

Sure. I have 20 of @Wisher1000 's Silver Campine eggs and some others for fillers/benchmarks in my little incubator. I get to candle next tuesday (day 10). Not opening that lid until then. The eggs came in great shape, none broken or cracked. Wisher1000 knows how to pack them.
