Well nothing worked to stop her laying.... but one day I put the vent back inside her and she kept it in! So she’s still laying but behaving normally, seems happy. So glad I didn’t lose her since she’s truly my favorite bird ever.
.
Thanks for the suggestions! She went to the vet today to get a Lupron shot to stop egg laying. I have no idea if it will work, and tomorrow’s a holiday so the next time I can see them is Friday. Here’s hoping she doesn’t lay again. Today’s egg caused a lot of bleeding.
I feed her 20% gamebird breeder. I want to make sure she can lay eggs with a good shell, so it has 3% calcium and she has oyster shell constantly available. She also gets a small mealworm as reward after her procedures.
She’s still eating and drinking, though, and quite chatty. The tissue is also less red and seems to slip back in easier. I just don’t know when the laying will stop.
She was prolapsed at around 5:00, a bit later she wasn’t! And after that, she laid a bloody egg, but didn’t prolapse! I hope this means she is on the mend. Today was super gloomy and dark and I am praying that her biological calendar finally realizes it’s winter.
Was just about to update. Pretty much the same, prolapsed after pooping, eggs have tiny bit of blood on them. Still laying in the dark, so is her friend. I give her an Epsom salt soak in the morning, replace the tissue as many times as possible throughout the day, and apply a good amount of...
Today’s egg laid, slightly bloodstained. Wiped a tiny black blood clot off her vent, but was able to replace all tissue and apply phenylephrine (Prep h) and hopefully she will be good tomorrow morning. I might apply more cream or hydrocortisone after a few hours. Also will put her and the other...
I have some hydrocortisone cream I used on the Italian hen. It didn’t seem to do much then, but this is a different case. I will apply it as soon as she lays today’s egg.
Yep, she’s on hen electrolytes, and her gamebird feed. I will order 24% protein but that may not arrive before next week. I can’t push the organs back inside until maybe 4 o clock when she lays her eggs. They just won’t go.
I’ve dealt with prolapse in coturnix before. My Italian gold hen prolapsed over the summer and fortunately, she is extremely sensitive and stopped laying for months either from stress or being kept indoors which saved her life. I was able to replace the tissue in her body and within three days...
