You should provide a box with really comfy material, like freshly dug up grass, which has low sides so they can jump in and out, and if a hen broods, put her in there. To get them started in laying inside a box, put some dummy eggs inside(1 at a time) and they will lay their eggs there. Works...

Mine prefer SMOOSHING THEIR BUTTS UP TO THE WALL AND CRACKING THEIR EGG OPEN.
