On the whole, it looks worse in person and when you see both sides of his face, but wattles and combs seem to heal amazingly well, don't they? Hawkeye looks perfectly fine, no visible damage at all.
Well, here is one pic of Suede, several days later, at least on the right side of his face. It doesn't show the damage on the inside of the wattles or his poor earlobes, but he refused to hold still for me today. Guess the humiliation was just too much for him, LOL.
He crowed a couple of times late today, but nothing like he usually does. That boy looks rough today! I should take pics of him. Looks like he's been in a prize fight.
I actually think Hawkeye weighs only just over 8 lbs. He's very broad, but not all that heavy. Poor Hawkeye has one terrible wattle that is so thick and wrinkled with scar tissue from, I believe, an injury when he was penned in close quarters with that turkey. He's had them pecked on my his...
I was a little nervous when I went to separate these two-never broke up a rooster fight before! But they didn't pay attention to me at all so it was easy to grab Hawkeye, toss him out of the pen, then pick up Suede. Hope that never happens again!
If I was going to leave Suede in that coop, I think I would get those roofing panels, Deb. I did think of that previously, but since I'm going to move him to another location, it wouldn't make sense to do that at this point. For now, they'll just have to have those tacky thin corded type...
Wow, BRs must be pretty tough for usually mild mannered boys, huh? You're right, Karen, I am very careful about the boys not being able to get to each other. Just the other day, I said to my DH that it wouldn't be pretty if they managed to meet without that fence in between. I also said that my...
I just came in from putting some antibiotic ointment on Suede's battle wounds. He looks pretty beat up, but nothing seems serious. Hawkeye, on the other hand, looks just like he did pre-fight except for a minor cut on the back of one leg. Amazing.
Thanks for the offer, Rog, but can you imagine the shipping on that big boy? Whew.
Sandy, I always take turns letting them range for just this reason, but today, Suede somehow just let himself into Hawkeye's side of the coop. The latch is very tight now-no way that can happen again like it did...
They run back and forth down that fence all day long. I have plans to permanently move Suede and his harem to another coop and let the laying flock spread out to the entire two halves of that one, but it will be a few months before that happens, I think.
I'll be checking Suede for infection...
Is it normal for a slightly hurt roo to let you treat their injuries without a lot of wing flapping?
It's normal for my two boys. Both of them have stellar temperaments, especially Hawkeye. They're very calm when I hold them, just extremely sweet roosters, except, obviously to each other!
My DH...
Well, it happened. Hawkeye and Suede finally met with no fence between them. Somehow, the door that divides Suede's coop from the larger side with Hawkeye and the laying flock got bumped and the latch lifted out. At least, I guess that's what must have happened. Suede went into Hawkeye's side...
