    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

We are really not 100% sure. He did injure his leg when he was pushed off the roosts by the older hens. But he began sitting more and more till finally he couldn't walk at all and he looked ill. He did get his color back after antibiotics, but his leg has never gotten the least bit better. When...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

He's in a playpen on the sunny deck right now. Just have to make sure his brother, Dutch, doesn't come up and jump in with him. We have a screen over the playpen as a barrier.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

Well, I hate that he cant get out. Since he has to sit on the ground, it's too cold for him most of the time. I do bring him into the house once a day to spend some time with us and terrorize the cowardly dog. He just chatters to himself, calls whoever will listen to come eat treats with him...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

Yes, just like water on the knee, but on the back. Then in addition to that, there are two more lumps filled with something, but not as watery feeling, more firm. He could have arthritis and the lack of feeling in the foot is probably permanent. The leg will not straighten no matter what we do...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

I'd have to get pics and I'm not sure you could tell much because you can feel the fluid in the hock joint bend, not really see it much. If you can imagine a bent leg, right in the bend, on the back of the hock joint is full of fluid; also higher up, there is a raised bump and on the outside of...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

We've used a needle for that before. The stuff inside was so thick, we just didnt have a big enough needle, I guess. And the skin at that joint is so thick, we'd need a fresh one. We're plumb out of needles at the moment. If it gets worse rather than better, we may have to do that.

Thank you, Jill. Give Lily a hug for her little brother, Zane. Thanks again to everyone who is following Zane's story and sending positive thoughts his way.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

I've shed quite a few tears over my Zane, too. And I'm sure more are to come. He's not friendless, though. There are girls in the flock who still adore him. There is about a 6 inch gap between the wire wall that makes Suede's coop and Zane's dog kennel. I caught my black Ameraucana, Gypsy, up...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

I do remember your Lucas. Thank you for reminding me of him. My feeling is that if we can cope with doing all these things for Zane, long-term, then as long as he seems happy and interested in life around him, I'd like to keep him with me. The infection has been the thing that has worried me so...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

DH is giving Zane antibiotics, one that we only gave him one round of before. He's on Day 11 of them. The joint is full of fluid, but he was hoping if there was infection, it would kill that and the fluid would be reabsorbed by the body. He doesn't want to open the leg again and start that cycle...

    Thanks you guys.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

BC, thanks for that explanation. I agree that it is possible that has happened with Zane. I'm hoping that DH will decide to let the vet amputate the leg and till he makes up his mind on a course of action, Zane is on the antibiotic that he was on once, but wasn't used multiple times. Maybe it...

Thanks for the recommendation, Carla. Heck, we've tried everything else.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

You guys are so sweet and helpful. It may take a few days for my DH to decide what he wants to do-he is so attached to Zane, just like I am. Meanwhile, Zane is getting more antibiotics pumped into him so the infection doesnt get worse, so I'll let you know when something new happens. Zane is...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

I'm sure the infection will kill him if it isnt contained. We are giving him lincomycin injections, just to hold it at bay till my DH can decide what to do. If we had anesthetic, we'd most likely amputate the leg ourselves, but we dont.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

Luna, that makes it even harder to decide what to do sometimes. If he was depressed, the choice would be clear, I think. He did have a period way back closer to the beginning when he was depressed and unhealthy looking, but now he's very robust and crows several times daily, flirts, alarms, all...

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

Crystal, if you could ask your vet why an infection keeps returning in the tissues, if he thinks there is more broken cartilage or bone pieces in there causing it. I just cant figure out why a soft tissue infection defies multiple rounds of penicillin, lincomycin, doxycycline AND Cipro. I'll...

to S.C. Thank you for the thought-you're such a generous person; you all are, but we cant go there. If DH calls the vet, we'll see what he says. He may never have treated a chicken in his life, but we'll see if he thinks anything can be done, once he knows the entire story.

    Zane, Chapter 7/Update

Went to town today to do some errands, so we just took Zane out into his pen to get some air and sun. He just talks and talks to us and still crows a few times a day, sometimes right in our arms. I love seeing his sweet face every day and will miss it so much, if we have to let him go.

I have my mother's favorite coffee mug that my dad gave me a few years after she died. It has the Footprints in the Sand printed on it.
