    lethargic chicken

fecal was negative no parasites no eggs. it’s 4pm, I just got home after a few hours out. her crop feels empty and her comb is starting to look pale. I saw her eat this morning, but obviously she’s not eating enough and something is still ailing her.

    lethargic chicken

how is that done? I took her out of the run and got her to eat a bit of yogurt with electrolytes again. she hopped off my lap and just moseyed herself across the yard back up to the coop. now she’s laying there looking not great. she pooped on the way. I have the pen set up for her in the garage...

    lethargic chicken

ok, thanks for this. wow nine days! I just decided to bring her back outside so she can get the flock interaction and hopefully regain her place as top hen. I saw her eat and drink and peck around a bit, and she’s perched alongside the others in the run as they like to do every morning. I’ll...

    lethargic chicken

so it’s been over 5 hours since the calcium and letting her rest and I’ve been checking hourly. no egg. she’s been in the same position just laying down, not looking particularly awful just sitting quietly, and she chirps when I come in to look at her. do I plan to leave her for another night...

    lethargic chicken

great tips thank you so much. her pen is in the closed garage away from the rest of the house which stays quiet and dark (I put a light over her just to take the photo) so I will keep her there. thank you for the quick reply and tips for getting the calcium in, will do this now!

    lethargic chicken

so I was able to give her the calcium tab yesterday, chopped up in pieces in a spoon of yogurt. (I could NOT get the whole tab into her beak even with two daughters helping me, if there’s a trick to that let me know!) either way she ate the whole thing. she spent the day with the flock and...

    lethargic chicken

I think you’re right @azygous because I had a pullet last year show this same behavior before and after a shell less egg. and I believe you were the one who told me about the calcium citrate! this australorp did attempt laying this morning but I didn’t find an egg of hers in that box. the day I...

    lethargic chicken

thanks for following up! while we had her in our “chicken ER” we were able to give her a bit of sav-a-chick electrolytes and probiotics in some yogurt, she ate that up, ate her feed, drank water, etc. I put her back with the flock in the evening and she was doing great. her crop has seemed...

here’s the two poops I found in the pen, first as is, second smashed with a stick to see better. this looks pretty typical to me…

    lethargic chicken

awesome, thanks so much. will return when I have a poop to share. haven’t seen one yet which seems kind of odd considering how often they go. do you suggest I keep feed in there with her or only water?

    lethargic chicken

thanks for the reply! yesterday she seemed alright, perked up by the end of the day. normal activity level. this morning she’s been low energy, standing by herself under the coop. not normal. her crop is empty. we offered her a bit of yogurt and she happily ate it up. I checked with a lubed...

    lethargic chicken

where do you start when diagnosing a lethargic chicken? this is my flock boss and she’s usually got quite an attitude. so far today, quiet, stationary at times, I saw a bit of roosting puffed up which I know isn’t normal. but then some regular energy foraging activity in between. when I let...
