I had chickens for several years, but haven't had any for about 15 years.

Egg prices doubled (and are still going up) and hubby and I talked about keeping some chickens for eggs to eat and sell.
We bought our first 8, young RIR, about 4 months old now, then traded a goat for 5 Comets. A friend gave us a Star after a raccoon attack ate all her chickens but the one.
We are adding 8 English Lavender Orps this weekend, and probably another dozen the following week. Our eventual goal is 100 hens.

We have moved our old hen house, which is made of solid barn lumber and plywood designed for concrete forms (coated with something and has held up amazingly).
We are starting with dog pen panels as we plan out a much larger pen.
Birds will also be allowed to range for a couple hours in the evening when I am home. We do have a fenced yard, but I know from experience that a 4' field fence will not stop determined chickens, but I'm thinking with only an hour or three before dark, they won't have a good reason to wander far.

As well as the chickens, we have a couple sheep, a bottle fed wether (now about 8 years old), a horse, 3 donkeys, a pair of Chinese White geese, a mixed breed gander, and 200 pigeons.

I raise white racers for funeral releases (did you know that pigeons are part of the dove family?), white fantail pigeons, and then have a loft of racing pigeons. My white birds pay to keep all the pigeons fed.

Oops, can't leave out my other feathered friends.
We have 3 pair of cockatiels, a pair of lovebirds, and a pair of white Ringneck doves with one youngster.
The Ringneck hen is a silky, but baby is normal. Waiting for them to nest again as I want more silky ringnecks.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Wow, that's quite a mix of animals you have there!! They sure must keep you busy. Good luck in your plans for your expansion plans with your flock. With 100 in your flock you should have plenty eggs.

We have a pigeon and dove section you might like to drop by too. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/52/pigeons-and-doves

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future and enjoy BYC :frow

Wow, that's a lot of animals to care for. Do you have any helpers? That is really neat that you have a wedding release of white pigeons. I'm not up on what goes on at weddings. I think I went to one as a teenager and that was it!

Glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

My hubby builds buildings for me as needed, and my oldest daughter is mentally challenged. She is my super helper.
She loves the birds, and has her own building of dropper pigeons (fancies used to show the racers it is safe to trap into their house).

She has been feeding the chickens, after I measure it out. And she collects the eggs for me.

I actually do more funerals than weddings with my birds. The little talk I do before the release about a spirit flying free, then releasing the 3 birds representing the Trinity to escort the spirit home, still gives me chills.
