We are new to this urban chicken thing and hoping someone can help me know if we brought home a cockerel instead of a pullet.

We got 3 chicks on Oct 9, 2016 - a Rhode Island Red, Speckled Sussex and Welsummer. I'm pretty sure the other two are pullets, but the Welsummer has me worried.

Welcome to BYC! Your Welsummer does appear to be a cockerel, becuase of the large comb and wattles at only around 5-6weeks old.

Yep, looks like you hit the Oops lotto.

Welsummers can be sexed not only by the amount of comb, but by color once they're feathered out. Your boy had black feathers on his breast, that's a male sign. Females of this breed/color have salmon/brown breasts.
