Our 5-month-old araucana hen Agnes just laid her first egg today. Here's how we found out:

I heard strange sound like the sound geese make when they fly by from the house. So we went down to the coop to see what was going on. Agnes was standing over her first perfect little egg, seemingly breathing pretty heavily. My wife, a nurse, says this type of breathing is called 'stridor'.

It was a hot Colorado day in the low 90's. We considered the possibility that she night have been over-heated, but our run where she was is almost completely in the shade and there was plenty of fresh water just a few feet from her.

We have three other hens in the same run with her and none of them had any other symptoms. She seemed slightly slow (let me pet her which is unusual), but continued eating and drinking as normal.

The symptoms gradually went away within a few hours.

I videoed the symptoms. You can see the video here:

Anyone ever seen this? What was going on with Agnes? We almost took her to the vet and are wondering if we should if it happens again?

Laying an egg is hard work, dontcha know? Probably someone more experienced will chime in but if it were my hen, I wouldn't be worried. Just sounds like a different version of the egg song. And I certainly would be panting if I laid an egg in that heat!

I don't believe it is anything to worry about. She was moving well and interested in eating, so aside from the strange noise she appeared fine. It did sound like a stridor, but I think a combination of heat and exertion may have only made it sound that way. I think the previous post was spot on with the comment about the egg song. She was singing to let the world know she laid an egg.

Good luck. She's lovely.

Thanks for the help, fellow chickeners. You're probably right - she was probably excited/exerted by her productivity.

Agnes has gone back to her normal self & seems fine and probably feels silly over all the concern.

My poor little EE pants when she is getting ready to lay. She really seems to strain and then out comes a little egg. I kept thinking with all that panting and straining that she might be laying an egg the size of a goose egg...but nope, just a little one.

My EE looks exactly like her and is now making that same noise, it has been going on since i came home. Went out and check on her still the same
Any suggestions?

Wow, I'm in Colorado and had the same problem with my EE. After a day, she is better. I have a thread on it but here is what she sounded like yesterday.

and now today.

I treated with vetrx and mms just to be safe. But it sounds like she would have recovered on her own.
