Ok...it is time for confessions....

I have doubted the apple cider vinegar theories for chickens...mainly because my mother is a big believer in the benefits of ACV and all thru our childhood we were dosed with ACV (whether we wanted it or not). We couldn't sneeze around our mother without getting a tablespoon of the stuff.

Friday evening my 5-week-old roo Faverolles was lethargic and barely moving. I examined him for any clear signs & symptoms of a particular illness, but nothing stood out enough to make a diagnosis. Without an avian vet nearby and armed with the only knowledge I had...I dosed his drinking water with vinegar. He was so weak Friday night, that I honestly doubted he would make it. Saturday morning he was moving around more but wasn't eating. I kept up the ACV. By Sunday evening he was eating! This morning (Monday) he was back to picking fights with the other roo chick & preening his feathers

For The Record: I used raw, organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar - 1 tablespoon per gallon

So to everyone out there in BYC land, that has ever suggested ACV....THANK YOU!!!!!

Trilyn, thanks for the info on the nipples.
I have not tried the AVC but think I will. I did try adding 1/2 tsp sugar to a pint of water for my new batch of chicks just to kick start them. I think it worked beautifully! They are 12 days old and going strong. I get such great ideas here.

Yep, all my waterers are plastic...we have a construction company and I am in charge of safety, so I get to read all about the deadly toxins that get released when galvanized metal is heated. Granted, I don't expect my waterers to get THAT hot, but once you read about the poisons used in the galvanization process, you'll never look at galv metal the same way again.
