Arizona Chickens

We broke 100F yesterday. We're still using ice trays and there's a fan on the coop to move air around, plus they get ice cold mash in the hottest part of the afternoon. A few hens were panting a little but everyone seems fine. I warned them this is just pre-heating for summer but they were too busy eating mash to respond.

Anyone have a mister you'd recommend, one that doesn't leak or clog (our water is very hard)? We're looking at ones like this:

We ordered these off Amazon 2 years ago. They're still working. Occasionally I'll use my fingernail to scrape the front if one isn't misting well. Haven't had to use vinegar yet but that is my backup plan. I also ordered a timer for it.

I wish someone would tell them hens can be louder than roosters.

Especially when they all get together and sing.
This is just my theory,,, but makes valid sense.
Some towns create the "no rooster policy" to keep down the Cock fighting gambling to minimum. No roosters in my area. City of Chicago allows roosters,, unless they become a nuisance, and someone complains. Then they instruct you to remove. :frow
I am also very much against such activity.,, Dog fighting also:hit

Agreed!

We can have roosters in my city as long as nobody complains.

Unfortunately cock fighting is a problem here so I bet that's part of it. It's vile. So is dog fighting. Horrific.

I think the other part is some people just don't want to hear the sounds of livestock where they live. I guess they prefer urban sounds like traffic and sirens.

Personally I love hearing livestock (someone around here has a rooster at least intermittently, we hear him now and then) but I get that not everyone does. I love hearing children playing, too, and some people don't like that either. 🤷‍♀️

Still, it's kind of silly to ban one type of animal when the allowed animals make more noise. I wish we could keep our roo. He's perfect and we just love him. I was just outside with the chickens and gave the roo a ton of hugs and kisses. He thinks I'm weird but goes along with it.

So far everyone is good with being picked up and handled. Some complain at first but tolerate it, which is all I ask. We just want to be able to handle them in case of an injury or illness without additionally stressing them out.

One of the leghorns comes running right up to be picked up, she's such a darling.
