The little one pipped at 7ish this a.m. and just now with in minutes came out of its shell. The cord was still attached and connected to shell. Now it is broke off shell but the chick is dragging this long cord twisted mass. Do we need to do anything? We will try to attach pics here. Right now it is kinda coming off at the stump. But I am not sure what the stump is...the vent, its umbilical cord?

One of mine had this as well, but the shell didnt come off soon enough so I cut it off and left the cord on the chick and it eventually came off. I just did not want it dragging around the shell and have the cord get pulled out.

thank you for the reply...okay it has pretty much come off all the way except a thread like piece. we won't open the incubator as there are 9 more in there. not a peep or pip from any of them though. now is this large bulby like lump sticking out of its rump that you can kind of see in the picture. is that normal? i don't think the other one looked like that when it hatched yesterday.

Your chick should be fine and you don't need to do anything. The bump is the navel. This is where the chick just got done absorbing the yolk and already has a full belly.
Good luck with your new babies.

ahhh, its the navel. okay that makes sense. if there was a smiley wiping its forehead or with a relieved look i'd be using that one right about now
