I was wondering.... I have about an acre pond in my horse pasture. My protector , A Great Pyrenees guards this pond 24 hrs a day. I have Call ducks and East Indies. Was wondering about some other wild breeds. Would they stay???? Or would they have to be pinioned? Need everyone else's experience in this.

Mandarins, pintails, wood ducks, shelducks tree ducks etc etc.

they will fly away unless pinioned or clipped

Please clip instead of pinioning.

A way I've heard of that seems kinder is to somply remove a few of the feather follicles in the cener of the wing. You can remove them by clipping off the skin in the area of feathers you want removed.

Pinioning is bording on animal cruelty in my opinion. How would you like it if I cut you arm off with a pair of shears?

Cutting off the skin would be more cruel than pinioning!

When pinioning birds that are a few days old; they usually do not even bleed and make more of a fuss because they are away from mom.

OPTION A:

Birds that are out on open water with clipped wings need to be captured before they start to moult and placed in a pen (stress #1)

They need to remain in that pen until they are done moulting, for birds use to being free ranging this is now stressful to readjust to being in a new environment (stress #2)

Then after they are done moulting, you can catch them again and now clip the wing feathers, NOT the skin (stress # 3)

Now you can turn them back out on the open pond, where they need to get re-established (stress #4)

REPEAT OPTION A AGAIN EVERY YEAR AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE BIRD ON AN OPEN POND

OPTION B:

Pinion the bird (stress #1)

Turn bird out on open pond to get established (stress #2)

Make your own comparissions- but I like option B of the bird being stressed twice in it's life as opposed to 4 times a year with option A.

I hope if you think pinioning is cruel your cats or dogs are not fixed, pinioning when done early, I have had it not even bleed.

Sounds like I accidentally struck nerve. How was it mean of me to stick up for the birds or express an opinion that is just as valid as yours. Sewing my mouth shut can't make my opinion go away.

I wasn't meaning to offend anyone. I was simply stating an opinion.

If done when they are young just as you stated about pinioning, the feather follical removing is less stressful in my experience. You don't understand how small of an ammount of skin it really is. About a quarter inch on a young bird and about an inch and a half in and adult bird. The skin cut doesn't generally bleed and the bird just goes back to it's life non the worse for wear. the feathers around the clipped area don't grow back if trimmed correctly.

When using the feather clipping method why would you need to catch them for the entire molt. Why not catch the birds toward the end of the molt and clip then. The wings are one of the last things to grow back after the yearly molts.

Removing the wing bone and all has always struck a nerve with me. I'm just the sort of person with a differing opinion from the rest of the waterfowl world. It does not mean you should prosecute me so fully for expressing that differing opinion.

For the record getting a dog or cat fixed has nothing to do with this. The cat or dog is unconcious during that surgery. My cat is spayed and my dog is neutered.

I think I may be steering clear of the exotic waterfowl community if that is how you intent on treating those who disagree with you. I was truly offended that you thought I show have my mouth Sewn shut. You guys should really think about what you say before you post.

You also shouldn't be so rude when you try to teach another member about something. You shouldn't all gang up on one person or basically tell them they're stupid and their opinion does not matter to you at all.

You all were terribly rude and I must say I'm offended by the way you all treated me.

If i'm the the one saying mean things I think you re examine what you said before.

I thought this was supposed to be a fun and supportive forum?
