My 8 week old Welsummer chick has somehow come down with butulism - she was fine 2 days ago, yesterday she was unable to walk, today it has spread to her neck (limberneck). As I was giving an attempt at a molasses flush, we noticed a few of her feathers coming out (even a tail feather).

I do have a thread I started when trying to diagnose her, but what I really need now is the correct treatment for a chick of this age. I mixed up a solution of molasses (1 tsp per 8 oz water), but do not know how much of that solution to give her at 1 time. So far, we've only given her 1 tsp full. How much do I give her and how often? Do I follow immeditately with electrolytes and vitamins - how often? I purchased epsom salts also, but I read somewhere that the molasses flush wouldn't be as hard on her system. Since she's this bad, which 1 should I start with? Is it okay to just flush with the molasses solution?

My thread with her original pics (pics not updated - legs are now in front and neck is hanging):

Edited to add: I gave her another 1/2 tsp of the molasses flush and then decided to go ahead and mix up some espom salts. I dissolved 1 tsp epsom salts into 1 oz warm water and gave her that mixture also. Was that a large enough dose for an 8 week old chick?

From what I gather, you do the epsom and water first and follow up with molasses a couple hours later. The molasses replaces some of the electrolytes lost in the flush and also has a laxative effect. I wouldn't overdo it to start with. Unless someone weighs in, maybe half a small dropper or maybe just several drops each time and see how she does.

This isn't for chicks, but maybe it will help.

LAXATIVE SOLUTIONS

The following solutions or mixtures are recommended to flush the digestive system of toxic substances, most notably for treating birds exposed to botulism toxins.

Molasses Solution

Add one pint of molasses to 5 gallons of water

Offer the drinking solution free-choice to the affected birds for about four hours. Treat severely affected birds individually if they cannot drink. Return the birds to regular water after the treatment period.

As a supportive treatment for symptoms resulting from Cryptosporidia infection, often referred to as coronaviral enteritis, use:

One quart molasses in 20 gallons of water

Offer this solution free-choice for a period of up to 7-10 days. It is assumed that the molasses replaces certain minerals lost from diarrhea during the course of the infection.

Epsom Salt Solution

1 lb Epsom Salt per 15 lb feed
-or-
1 lb Epsom Salt per 5 gallons water for 1 day

Give the epson salt feed mixture as the sole feed source for a one day period. This feed can be used only if the birds are eating. If the birds are not eating, use the water solution. If the birds are unable to eat or drink by themselves, use individual treatment with:

1 teaspoon of Epsom Salt in 1 fl oz water

Place the solution in the crop of the affected bird. This same amount of solution will treat 5-8 quail or one chicken.

Castor Oil Therapy

Dose individual birds with .5 oz castor oil.

I've heard some say to do the epsom salts first and others say not to do epsom salts at all, but just molasses. I did end up giving her epsom salts twice, but am not sure how much to give a small chick. She's had 1 tsp epsom salt mixture twice - and also some molasses. She's also eaten for me - As long as I hold her she has a tremendous appetite, but she can't eat at all without me keeping her propped up. I've giving her yogurt mixed with polyvisol and also chick starter.

I'm getting ready to give her some more molasses/water and some more food.
