Hi Everyone,

I started workin on my new coop this week. I am planning to add a nice Automatic Door Opener and so far I like the McMurray one. Well kinda the only one I see that works with sensor, and is a full kit, so looks easy to install. Also will be hooking up my 60 watt solar panel to this, so being 12 volt is a must (no electric at the coop). Anyone know of other options without it being one of those all day DIY projects?

I have the one from Foy's Pigeon Supply with an inside mount and a light sensor. It's pricey but not quite as pricey as McMurray's. It works on 4 AA batteries and has been working flawlessly on the same set of batteries since last August. I am so glad I went with an auto coop opener....it lets me sleep in on the weekends.

I made my own sliding door for it out of some painted scrap luan with trim to stiffen it and it slides up and down on some drywall U channel. I raised the sill of the chicken door so that the door slides a few inches below it so no predator can get their paws under it to raise it up. It was very easy to make the door and a piece of cake to install the opener itself. Good luck with your auto door decision.

I, too, have the Foy's Electronic Doorkeeper and have just ordered a second one for the new coop being built. No power necessary at the coop, the batteries last a LONG time (close to a year, now) and the factory setting on the light sensor has been perfect. The door opens after dawn, closes at dusk. The birds are always inside before it closes, but sometimes I have seen Carl, my dominant rooster, actually putting his head under the slowly rising panel and push it up to get out before the door is fully open.

I also have a sill it drops behind so no paws can reach under to pull it up. It fits into the metal door channels tightly enough to prevent any paws from pushing it back to lift up.

I love the thing! (Hence my purchase of a second one.)

Actually $199 does not include the kit? They just told me that is only for the opener, the door and timer cost extra, and pulley. So technically the McMurray one is cheaper or about the same. I think that will be the one I will go with the McMurray version, as it also has a light kit. Thanks guys.

I don't know what your DIY skills are, but DH had the Addamotor installed in an hour.

Already had a door. A piece of scrap metal. Didn't need or want to spend any extra money. This and a timer from Lowe's and we had it in for under $100.

Got it at Discount Automation. THey also have a solar kit which may work for you too.

We love ours.

Never had a problem with it, and it was cheap and easy.

Anyway, good luck!
