If this is your first time incubating, I would wait until day 10 to see anything. By that time there should be plenty of development to be able to see something. I like to use two flashlights. I set the egg on top of the first flashlight pointy end down. I use the rubber bottom of a "plumber's helper" to concentrate the light from the flashlight on the bottom and to hold the egg in place. I use a mag light for the top flashlight. That way you have light going into the egg from the top and the bottom. It makes it easier to see inside the darker colored shells.

Get a stronger light. 200lumens is what I use. You can find the led lights with multiple bulbs at a local drug store. I candle copper maran eggs without trouble. When candling early on I look for a dark spot hovering around the center and closer to the fat end. It is often difficult to see that early on, buy I candle 7,13,18 just to keep accuracte records.

Now, like others have said, you may want to get a stronger light. And being that they are dark

colored eggs, you will have to wait a few more days to candle, as they are very hard to see into. I'd
wait till' day 10-15, to candle. I enclosed a picture of one of my eggs on day 7-8. You should look for

mass, cloudiness, and/or veins in the egg. I also put a link for you to look at.

^^^^ Notice the veins leading to the little blob in the middle? That little blob is the growing chick :)

What kind of flashlight did you use? I have an 80 lumen LED and last time I checked on day 3 all I could see was the yolk shadow I believe. What can I do to brighten it a bit more?

thank you, thank you, thank you for this forum. i have 11 copper marans eggs in the bator. on day 7 i tried to candle with my cheapy flashlight, and of coarse saw nothing. i love these tips. thank you, thank you.

hi thanks for the replys i am using a handheld spot light which i thought would have been bright enough as i shines all the way down to the bottom of a 2 acer field no probs, i also have a cheapy touch that is easyer to direct the light into the eggs that works great on the duck egg i have which is forming nicely. but i can still only just work out the yolk in the eggs i have that are the same age now 7 days i got these ones of a local farmer who has a cock with his hens but wasnt sure if he doing his job is there away of knowing by the shape/size of the yolk? my other eggs are only 4 days old i was promised when i brought them there would be a 95% hatch rate on these ones but i think i got fobbed off as i think they were stored in a fridge as they were cold and stored point end up.
