chick shaking issue

Up days and down days for Nick.
Once he was on the pure vitamin b1 (10mg) and vitamin e (10 mg) from health food store - he had huge improvements. His legs work fine- he just cant stay balanced, flops to the left. Left wing is getting distorted from pushing his body along.
Allowed him to eat real chicken food - my own conconction of 3 way scratch, wild bird mix, turkey mash for protein, grit and sweet feed. He loved it so much he wont eat the baby food of abba green, soymilk, and vitamins. So I almost have to force feed him or mix it in with cooked oatmeal. i make his beak go into the spoon and he pushes against me to NOT eat baby food.

His will to live is really strong! He acts like he can scratch his feed but of course his legs are up in the air cuz he sits on his butt and does the motions. i place him outside leaning on a clump of grass and he goes crazy, flapping and scooting and trying to eat grass. If i hold my finger under his butt, he can actually balance and walk a few steps. Yet when he pushes against me to not eat baby food, BOTH legs work just fine. When laying on his back he can turn himself back over, no problem.

THEN today he starts having spasms again, spasms had stopped days ago!

Couple of things - when I started the b1 and e vitamins I stopped the polyvisol. The less baby food I get in to him, the severe symptoms come back. From what I've read the vitamin b1 (thiamine) is a speedy recovery and we are almost a month along.
I actually leave the island in 3 weeks and he has to be well or .......

Little Chassidy - her eyesight is back. When wormed for eye worms they were so bad I think she was in shock (I've told her breeder and he's worming all his chickens) and her eyesight left- I knew she could see when she jumped out of the hospital/carrier and jumped onto the computer. She is also eating the baby food and loves it. When the other chickens approached her and Nick -she attacked, this 2 inch chick attacked full grown serama and bantam old english. They raised their hackles and was really gonna get her she didnt back down at all- she's a tough cookie.

HELP AGAIN needed - IDEAS??

Quite by accident I think I have found what Nick has - botulism every symptom is exactly on the bulls eye.. Will call Vet tomorrow and give him my diagnosis LOL
I noticed a pattern in the last 4 weeks. When we were at home he seemed fine - but when i took him to work and fed, he'd just stop eating at some point and start twitching in the corner. Yet, he pecked at corn and goodies. By the end of the day his neck would be just hanging and limp or waving from side to side like Stevie Wonder, we'd get home he perked up after a feeding.

Home was abba green in soymilk, vitamins and a drop of agave and noni. Water had a dribble of agave also. Work formula (abba in water) I figured he didnt need the additional stuff since he had it in the morning. WRONG when I think about the vitamin deficiency was he really eating all of the dose. No he's sharing it with Chassidy, plus often they didnt eat it all and I'd dump it. My mom said 'great you created a diabetic bird with all that agave! - you leave in 3 weeks and Im not taking care of a diabetic chicken' Rush to the computer and search diabetic chicken symptoms found article

http://poultry.msstate.edu/extension/pdf/diseases_poultry_diagnosis_symptoms.pdf you search by symptoms affecting body part - botulism kept coming up
- further search on poultry net, byc, and others. Not almost same symptoms but exactly the same even the leaning and weak left leg. The cure? An antitoxin or keep him alive till toxin wears off.
Thinking back to December - grandkids were out of school and taking care of all birds, I was so busy at work often till 9 pm at night - assumed they were doing it all correctly - teenagers take shortcuts plain and simple - brooders are lined with newspaper and often food would get under the paper and be yucky - paper was changed daily and brooders scrubbed on Sundays but it was that yucky stuff, even just one day would be toxic.
Live /learn/rectify seems to be the case with poultry for beginners. Will continue posting thanks for all the pm's

I caught the vitamin B deficiancy early before any damage was done. I add 1 tablet if brewers yeast in their water everyday. The shakes or seizures have stopped. I also gave vitamin e to help recovery. You could not tell they had any sort of deficiency. I hope this helps. Even when you don't see shakes I recommend adding brewers yeast to water

Hi! I followed your posts with your little shaky chick. I have a four-day old chick that started exhibiting symptoms similar to your guy this morning. I am a wildlife biologist with a background in infectious disease and of course, first thing i did was google his symptoms. I am concerned about an uncommon viral disease called Avian Encephalomyelitis which is highly infectious. It can also be contracted by what is called "vertical transmission" from hen through the egg so they may show symptoms and never be around any other chickens. They evidently can recover in some cases but many never fully recover and show symptoms rest of their life. I was just wondering what ultimately happened with your little guy and whether this disease ever came up with your vet in considering the diagnosis. Thanks!

Update today on my little 'shaky chick' whom I was concerned may have Avian Encephalomyelitis (AE). Also, a little background about myself: I am a wildlife rehabber and biologist for the Army down here in So Cal and fortunately, I have tons of experience nursing along sick/injured birds and babies of all kinds but it's funny when it's one of "your" babies how much more nerve-wracking it is!!

So, yesterday, after finding this 3-day old alone in the 'nursery coop' corner, eyes closed, looking pretty sorry first thing in the morning, I separated her from the rest and attended to her every need every moment of Wednesday and looks like so far, my efforts are paying off. NO further sign of tremors this morning, NO sign of the 'butt sitting' on her haunches (or whatever they are called in chicks!) and after syringe-feeding with a good quality baby bird formula yesterday (InTune organic), she is much stronger and is currently running around with a mealworm in her mouth! Looks like we are out of the woods for now and 'probably' it is not AE after all, but I've been reading furiously since yesterday about it and it looks like a tricky disease that can come and go, symptomatically-speaking. Will post again in a while to report any further changes. And, Thank You, TwoCrows, for your message! ;-)
