Using fishing line over the top

After trying several other things, I'm going to just cover my entire chicken run with fishing line to help prevent hawk attacks. My fencing is 7 feet tall so the line won't interfere with a person walking around inside the run and if the goats do happen to jump that high (doubtful but possible I suppose) they will just snap the line instead of strangling in it.

How far apart do you think I need to string the line? I'm thinking 18" or 24" apart would be fine since a hawk's wingspan is quite a bit wider than that. I have a pretty large area I'm going to be covering with the fishing line so I don't want to go any closer than I really need to.

please be careful... we did this with our run and as the sun breaks down the line.. stuff landed on it (pine cones leaves nothing big) the line gave way and broke after about 3 months and then we had the problem of chickens getting it caught and wrapped around their legs... we have some feather legged breeds so that was fun to untangle...

i would try ebay or cutlers and see if you can get the netting for the top.. thats what we did in the long run.

good luck

If your plan it to create a net, I would go as close as 12" and use a colored line so the birds have a chance to see it or tie some engineer tape to it in various places to keep them from crashing into it. If you are only running it one direction, then your width should be fine but definatly flag it to avoid injuring birds unnecessarily. Assuming you just want them to leave you alone, not kill them.

Interesting idea, please let us know how it works.

My run is about 6 feet high and I am using logs from the property as building material. Have you considered getting some sappling size poles and then covering the top with poultry net? That's what I did. No hawk will get in nor will a racoon, possom, etc. I just coverd the run that way. You can see example on my BYC page. Good luck!

we use anti bird netting over our runs. it is 1/2 inch squares. a 15' x 45' roll at home depot is $19.00 it is in the garden department. I attach it to the fence with cable ties. I hang old cds and other shinny fluttery things on the underside so the hawks can see the netting. it has worked rally well for us.

Except for the ones that rip or bite thru the poultry net and get in that way. (assuming by 'poultry net' you mean either aviary netting or chickenwire)

Just sayin',

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
