Ok chicken people,

I posted pics yesterday of the newest chicken that I took on from someone that couldnt keep it, and it seems to be the consencus that it is a Cornish X. I'm sitting here reading horror stories about these birds and not sure I have the heart to keep it if it is going to do nothing but live what short life it has, in misery.

Can you guys give me info on what you know about these birds. Longevity, etc?

Yeah I kind of worded my comment/question weirdly Itsy. I would have never ever taken this bird had I known what it was before it was dropped off at my house. I dont have it in me to raise any animal as food, and feel foolish for having posted on the " meat board" lol.

Oh I don't think it's a weird question at all. There have been several people who have posted on this section of the forum about the longevity of CornishX's to keep as pets.

Are you going to try to raise it on a diet to try and keep it as a pet? As difficult as it is... I've heard of one living to be about 2. Maybe others have more experience on the topic

I have had chickens for 5 years and in a recent order this spring I accidentally received three of these.

It was awful! I felt so bad for them. They could hardly carry themselves around and sat in their own poop all day because they were to heavy to get up. They also ate 4 times as much as my heritage chickens and took up the space of two in the coop.

We tried really hard to make them comfortable and keep them in good shape, but it was like rolling a boulder up hill.

At around 4 month they started really suffering in the heat and after having one stroke out we gave them to friends to butcher.

I say do what we did and find someone who wants to eat them. Let them take them to the butcher.
 
I took 1 in for a family. They got it for the kids as an easter present. Well it started to crow and they had to relocate it from the city. When it came to me, it had to weigh close 20 pounds, it was huge. I put it on a diet knowing they would come to visit. It didn't matter, it was dead before it was a year old. It's legs started to give out and within 2 days it had a heart attack.
 
I have no idea how old this one is, or whether or not its a rooster or hen. I just know that it is very personable, very dense ( as in weighty ) and has huge feet and walks like a duck. I just picture it being miserable before long and I dont want to see that happen, nor do I want anyone to butcher it =/

Make sure you restrict feed, it seems to still be strong but you dont want to get too much weight on their legs if youre not going to butcher it, you could always sell it to someone who will.
