I've seen mentioned here about using over-the-counter conjunctivitis eye drops for chickens. There are SO many different kinds of eye drops, so I was wondering what brand (or generic equivalent) to get to have on hand. What are the active ingredients? What dosage? On what occasions do you use eye drops?

Also, I've seen to use saline on occasion. Do you use saline eye drops? Saline nasal spray? Do you mix up your own saline? If so, what ratio? If store bought, what brands (or generic equivalent)? On what occasions do you use saline?

Thanks!

Hi, I work in a pharmacy and have given my chickens eye drops many times if they have an infection. Theres a lot of brand names for conjunctivitis eye drops ie Optrex here in the UK. Theres lots of different eye drops too, Hay fever ones, itchy ones but theres only 1 eye drop for conjunctivitis, it contains Chloramphenicol which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which means it is effective against infections caused by a wide variety of bacteria...Only use if your chicken has an infected eye, Swollen or closed. dont use if it has an injury in its eye... Use 1 drop 3 times a day for about 4 days depending on the severity..

Ps; I would always recommend getting an antibiotic eye drop from a vet first...

Hope This helps, Tracy...

For a homemade eyewash solution, boil one cup of water with 1 teaspoon of salt. Make sure you let it cool before flushing the eye. If you continue to flush, make a fresh mixture daily. For a pecked eye, I recommend terramycin eye ointment after flushing.

Thank you guys! Mrs White minor eye / respiratory infection. I've been giving here 50mg of Amoxycilin orally with a syringe but here left eye is still bubbly a little, bacteriostatic water and saline has been helping a lot. She's still a b-i-t-c-h to the other girls but she seems to like being in the house for a few minutes :)

It sounds like you could be dealing with mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) You can give 50 mg per pound of amoxicillin daily. I would give half in the morning and half in the evening. Terramycin eye ointment twice a day applied to the eye can be helpful. MG symptoms can come back later with stress, such as cold weather or molting.

That sums it up really well Egg-cessive :)... and good news, it worked! Day 2 of the Terramycin drops, working really well. Mrs White seems to be out of the woods.
