my hen was egg bound,egg broke inside her!!!!

hello i have 5hens and 2 cockrels,one of my hens was acting sick,i realised she was egg bound so bathed her and put her back in the coop,today i realised she wasnt eating and seemed to hide from the flock so i examined her again and i hope i did the right thing....i saw a piece of egg(it was long plastic looking )sticking out of her vent so i SLOWY EASED not pulled it out.After this the discharge started dripping slowly from her vent.she is now in a warm box in my house eating again.Will she be ok?or do i need to take her to the vet?please help as my hens are my pets thank you.x
 
Removing as much of the egg shell and membrane was the right thing to do. Just keep an eye on her for a while and if she continues to improve you probably don't need to bring her to the vet. I wonder if she is laying kind of soft shelled eggs. You will probably check her regularly to make sure it is not an ongoing problem.
 
thank you for your feed back im hoping she will be ok,if she is laying soft eggs how can i help her in the future?my hens are free range and have a large coop for the night time so they get to forrage around.Maybe a bowl of grit?really not sure what to do,we have very cold and damp weather at the moment maybe this is the cause?xx
 
Your biggest concern will be bacterial infection if the egg broke inside her. She may not survive if this is the case. However, you can try a vinegar/water flush to try and prevent bacterial infection. Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar in 6 ounces of warm water and gently squirt it into her vent. Do this several times using a large syringe without a needle. The flush may or may not flow out her vent, but hopefully it'll prevent infection. As mentioned, provide crushed oyster shell as free choice, they know when to eat it. Good luck.

thank you for your tips!my hen is doing well back with her group and laid an egg today!ive added a tray of crushed oyster shell into the coop so hopefully she will use it,i know she may suffer again from this problem but am ready for it this time.There is another chicken who seems ok in character but looks very scraggy compared to the others?,she lays and doesnt seem sick but why does shy look so skinny and bald around the chest?my chickens wear jackets created for poultry to prevent the males from damaging them while mounting,i de- mite my birds regualy as the warm jackets would otherwise create a warm place for the mites to hide so cant understand why her plumage is so horrible?x
