First Coop - Design & Build

I honestly don't remember where I heard that about blue paint. It may just make the eaves and soffits too slick to attach to. I have paper wasps and mud daubbers around here and they don't attach a nest to anything that is painted sea-foam green, either.

We put 2 feet of chicken wire extended around the entire base, and stapled to the inside of the boards. Then we will put sand/rock outside for landscaping.
As for the dirt floor, I hoped to leave it natural sand/weeds. What do you think?
Thats fine, was just wondering because I didn't see any signs of it on the outside. Got worried, hate to see all your hard work go up in smoke because something got in. Very good.

A little update, as we are trying to finish this chicken house this weekend!

Einstein trying out the new chicken stage. we haven't finished the ramp yet, so s/he had to be set on the ramp. Not the bravest bird. We actually had to pose s/he.

SItting on the nest box edge. I hope its a she and one day she will be using this box!

We are making the ramp today. That way we can get these babies to try and start using it.

Whew, we have been working all day on the chicken house! I think we have final got our ranch style chicken house....almost complete.

Silkie and Sizzle on the chicken stage

All huddled up, this is the completed area for now. If we get too many hens, we can always have the option to build another symmetrical nest box/roost on the left.

We used a recycled rubber mat on the ramp, and this is a shot of the temporary waterer/feeder. We are getting an irrigation system installed this week, with a water line to the chicken house, that easy we can easily setup a nipple system/automatic waterer. Also, we are considering the PVC pipe feeder.

Smart little Sizzle going up and down the ramp.

Silkie stuck on the ramp. Trying to figure it out.

The silkie fan club, cheering section...hoping to motivate the silkie to move. lol.

Almost finished. Besides the landscaping, we plan to add a large oak branch for a roost in the run. We also need to clean-up the worksite, but we ran out of energy!
