First Coop - Design & Build

we were thinking about the shade, but we are so fortunate, that we are in the middle of the woods and the trees are so thick around the house. The only direct sun the coop gets is about 10am. With the insulated OSB (sorry I know Im not calling that right), it has aluminum foil looking stuff on it, so far when we are standing inside, its really cool. Its been about 88 degrees here. We will probably have to put a fan in the coop thou, because last year it was 108. We do plan to let them out during the day thou. Oh and my chicken math is changing. Due to the BYC experts, I think I found out 2 of my chicks are roos ;( Glad I got 12~

Here is the egg access area.

I'm calling this the chicken stage. You can see that I painted the ceiling blue, because I didn't want depressed chickens that felt like they were living in a cave! Ha

The front is almost finished here. We have to find a metal trim piece to cover the edge.

Here is the updated chicken stage. I have painted 3 coats on this area. I bought vinyl flooring to match the coop, because the chickens are very particular about design. ;) Anyways, I haven't decided if I am going to bring the vinyl flooring up the walls a little, like "backsplash". Which really sounds gross when thinking about using it for chickens. Otherwise, caulk would go in the corners between the vinyl and wall.

This is coming along nicely.

The only comment/question is(actually 2),what are you planning for the floor run material and are you or have buried any hardware cloth outside the coop to keep digging predators from entering? Other than those, looks great.

This is just gorgeous. And the blue roof will keep wasps from making their nest on your ceiling (at least in theory).

I am building something kind of like your concept but using 1/2" x 1" welded wire (cage wire) instead of hardware cloth. I felt is was stronger and that any predator I have to worry about isn't going to fit through that size opening.

Please continue with the pics!

I had never heard that before...is it true? I have a wasp problem during the summer months.

What is your source? I would like to look that up.

supposedly if you paint soffits blue mud dobbers won't make houses on them. Not sure if everyone has mud dobbers or not, but we have them here in Texas and they are messy. I've never tried it, but we will watch this summer and I will update you!

We put 2 feet of chicken wire extended around the entire base, and stapled to the inside of the boards. Then we will put sand/rock outside for landscaping.

As for the dirt floor, I hoped to leave it natural sand/weeds. What do you think?
