I am working on a new coop design and I am going to try your idea.

I think I'll try to mount it to the side/ back wall of plywood about a ft up or so.

thanks!

Mine may be about 1 1/2 feet up but I have a running board in from of it so they can get their balance before they hop up into the nest. The piece of trim runs in front of the opening so it will be more study than just the half lid and not as sharp on their feet. I have to pass the credit down my my hubby. We are working on nest for the Marans now. Same way.
Thanks

used buckets for yearrrrs they work well u can also cut an entry section out of a plastic milk crate and put it in a corner they love that too.if there one thing i have learned chickens are not half as picky as the people that keep them we spoil our birds hahahaha and thats a good thing but buckets do just fine for sure

My banties would not use the 5 gal bucket. They said it was too small but they are also Cochins and have the big butts!

I know my Jersey Giants could never fit in them.
Right now I have one hen broody in an old rubber food/water bowl and my other hens lay in old wood boxes laid on their sides. All my nest boxes are on the floor. Works for me and the hens.

My wife sent this to me the other day. Thought it to be appropriate for this topic:

I just made three bucket-nesting-boxes for my new chickens and they are quite happy with them! Simple, cheap, and easy to clean. Just the way I like it!
