Disinfect coop after Marek's?

I just had to cull one of my hen's for what we suspect was Marek's. It was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but she was clearly suffering.

She had been acting strange for over a month now, and we never separated her. Does that mean it is too late for my other hens?

If I were to disinfect the coop, how would I do it? Obviously, I would replace the bedding, but should I bleach the coop? I'm not sure how to go about this. Thank you.

Can someone please help me out? I'm hoping to get this done tomorrow, and I would like to know the best way to go about it.

I've not had to deal with this yet. I'm so sorry you do.
I've seen bleach mentioned in the past, but more often seen Oxine suggested.

Just for clarification, it is a wooden coop with sand and sweet PDZ as the bedding.

Thank you for your response. I am new to chickens, so what is oxine?

Your best course of action would have been to have had a necropsy done on your hen so you would know whether or not you were dealing with Marek's. Most states have labs that will do them for little/no cost.

As far as disinfecting...I would clean out the entire coop, scrub everything with a bleach/dish detergent mixture and then, using a spray bottle, spray the entire thing with a mild bleach solution. Allow to dry and put in fresh bedding. Unfortunately, even before Marek's symptoms appear, the bird has been infected for 6 - 8 weeks. All your other hens have already been exposed. Marek's is shed in dander/feces/saliva...it is in the air/soil/everywhere. You can't disinfect the ground she walked on and you have been carrying it back and forth to the coop the whole time on your clothing, hair and shoes.

All you can do now is disinfect what you can and pray that the rest will be okay.

What makes you think that your hen had Marek's?

Virkon S is effective in decontamination against many diseases including Mareks.

Thank you so much for this information. Tomorrow I order some of this for myself!!! I've been using Oxine but this will be a great addition to my arsenal!

Thank you all for the suggestions. Will they have oxine at Tractor Supply?

We decided to cull her so suddenly there was no opportunity to even look for somewhere to do a neceoscopy. I believe she had mareks after reading many forums on byc. I'll never be 100% sure about that, but I know she was suffering immensely.

I'm lucky enough to have a chicken tractor that we move around the yard almost daily. As soon as we culled our sweet hen, the coop was moved to the farthest part of the yard, where the coop had never been.

I have not seen any symptoms in my other hens but am keeping a close eye on them.

Would you mind posting your hens symptoms?

Oxine can not be bought at Tractor Supply. I think most people purchase it from...Lambert Vet Supply. It is pricey but will last a long time since you dilute it alot. Make sure that you use the nonactivated directions. Activating oxine makes it deadly to humans and poultry..unless you were a special mask. Unactivated, it is a wonderful disinfectant.
