Are you serious about diapering four goslings?

I used the Goose's Mother's diaper harnesses for my goose when she was a gosling. They need to be changed every time the gosling poops. Which is at least twice an hour; often every 10-15 minutes unless the gosling is down for a nap. I'd think long and hard about diapering two goslings and most likely decide against it, but I'd never consider diapering four of them unless I had live-in hired help (preferably a small army).

On top of all the time spent merely changing the diapers, you have to count in that accidents will occur. They may rip off the diaper, or the diaper may not be able to "carry the load", leaving the harness soiled. You'll need two or three harnesses per gosling so you'll always have a clean, dry harness for them. And often the gosling's butt is soiled, which means it will have to be cleansed and dried.

Here's how we'd typically go:
10.00 Gosling is diapered.
10.08 Gosling poops. Diaper insert is changed.
10.10 Gosling decides harness is fun to tug at - harness is adjusted.
10.12 (repeat)
10.15 (repeat)
10.18 (repeat)
10.20 Gosling poops. Large load has dispensed on harness, gosling, and floor.
10.21-10.30 Gosling is cleansed, dried and diapered in a fresh harness. Soiled harness is washed and hung up to dry. Floor is wiped.
10.30 Gosling poops. Diaper insert is changed.
10.35 Gosling somehow manages to fit harness halfway on its back - harness is adjusted.
10.38 Gosling is eating and drinking.
10.50 Gosling has been happily chirping for some time now. Upon closer inspection, it has pooped, then tried with partial success to remove soiled diaper and preen butt area. Poop has been flung on surrounding floor, furniture, and food bowl. Water is everywhere. Gosling is wet and soiled. Upon discovery, poop is flung on pants.
10.51-11.05 Gosling and mess is cleaned up and dried. Gosling is diapered in a fresh harness. Pants are changed. Harness is washed and hung up to dry.
11.06 Gosling decides it's not dry enough in the butt area and tries to remove harness so it can preen itself.
11.07 Gosling is dried more thoroughly and rediapered.
11.10 Gosling decides harness is fun to tug at - harness is adjusted.
11.12 (repeat)
11.15 (repeat)
11.20 Gosling delivers very liquid load. Load is dispensed on harness, gosling, and floor.
11.21-11.35 All harnesses are now wet. Hair dryer is used to speed up harness drying process. Gosling, nervous about hair dryer sound, poops incessantly. Gosling is cleansed and dried and put in a dry harness. Floor is cleaned up.
11.40 Discovery of poop footprints on floor. Seems gosling foot has stepped on previous mess and dispersed it in quite a large area.
11.45 Floor is cleaned up.
11.52 Gosling poops. Diaper insert is changed.
Repeat throughout day.

I hate the idea of putting these things of birds. Its so unnatural and the time and effort changing the diaper at least 4 or 5 times an hours is crazy! How can do that realistically?!

I also think that is must be uncomfortable for the bird to have a dirty diaper stuck to its butt. Birds keep their feathers spotlessly clean, but the diaper will trap the poop on the birds behind, soiling the feathers and area around the vent. Whoever thought of these things in not thinking about animal...rather themselves.

Its much better to keep the gosling or chicks in a pen which can be cleaned out each day. Then give the poor birds a natural life in outdoor garden or enclosure.

I see so many times people buying cute baby ducks and they are so confident they will keep them as house pets, but 9 times out of 10 they end up dumping the poor bird on a lake or farm when it reaches adult size and is no longer cute and they are sick of the mess.

Chickens, ducks and other poultry are not suitable for house pets. Next people will want a horse diaper!

We only ever use a diaper harness when we need a bird inside for treatment, never as an option for full time. Geese NEED to be outside to be healthy. Why would you diaper four brand new goslings? Put them in a secure brooder over night, and in a secure daytime run during the day so they can graze on grass like they should to be happy and healthy.

Exactly. That's why it needs to be changed immediately after each poop. Which makes it a very time-consuming ordeal - and I really don't see it happening with four birds.

SO TRUE!!! Goslings poop a lot when they scared. And I quickly found out that solid poo is much easier to clean up, but my goslings would always have a surprise of liquid poop waiting for me in the morning. Thanks, goslings

Charmayne, do you know how old the goslings you're getting are?

Here's a pic of where my guys stayed their first couple of weeks while we built their 'real' house. They only stayed in here for bed time

They're a week old here. Ended up only using newspaper to line the bottom & put lots of shavings on top because they would eat the newspaper. Plus the shavings were easier to clean.

During the day we put them in a large dog kennel when werent able to keep a constant eye on them (they would wander a lot). And we would move the kennel to different spots (under shade) so they had lots of new grass to eat. And they could poop ALL they wanted outside with no worries.
