I've just noticed on my pullets throat doesn't look right. When I examined it I found this swelling, it's like a fluid filled sac under her throat. I saw her eat, but her crop is nearly empty. Any ideas? I phoned the vet, who's coming tomorrow only. And I'm a bit worried now...
Could be a couple of things. Sounds like from your description that she has sour crop. Her wattles and comb have good color. How hot is she? Do you have a thermometer? If so, hold the hen and place the thermometer into her vent and take a reading. Should be 103F (40C).
Thanks for you reply. Don't have a thermometer (or rather not a suitable one). She didn't feel hot.
Her wattles are bit swollen as well and the bit just below her ears, I've no idea what it's called, are swollen as well. You can see that in the pic.
She behaved like normal, walking around eating and so. It was only when I looked closely at her that I noticed something's wrong.
Oh, we looked inside her mouth and down her throat and that looks normal too. I don't know! Did something bite her maybe?
I'll have a look tomorrow. She's sleeping now. (It's evening here) We don't get fire ants thankfully! And they are in their run most of the day. I give them all their food and when I let them out I watch what they get up to and there's nothing to eat there, so I don't know.
I have a hen just like yours, certainly eats good no obstructions on throt, but swollen wattles area and harden. Would you mind telling the medicine name, so I can treat my bird.
