70,000 dead

I dont believe it was on purpose...

The owner stated that the chickens couldnt survive more than 15 minutes without electricity. How is that possible?

Actually, the reporter stated that the owner said, they begin to die in 15 minutes. A difference.

In the heat of August, it would not take long to cook them. These were slaughter ready birds, apparently. In very close quarters, the heat output is likely intense. Giant cooling fans force a lot of air through those big houses.

The guy was drunk and laying in a pool of his own urine. Very pathetic, really.

To watch chickens? those building have backups for backups an alarms hooked to the power that can be heard for miles.

Yet? Nothing in the report about alarms. No one responded until the owner showed up the next morning, finding his $220,000 crop dead.
I reckon if'n I had a quarter million dollar crop in a million dollar facility, I might consider some kind of system, human or electronic, I dunno.

Quote: There would not have been an alarm. The system is set up to alarm if the main power fails, not when the owner cuts the power to do maintenance.

The owner probably lives on the property anyway. Paying someone to be a night watchman would cost around $52K a year. 4 years of paying a night watchman would cost the same as his losses for this one event. The cost of the watchman would most likely be more than the losses ever will be.

Geeesh, to think we used to work as night watch security for barely a few cents over minimum wage.

Reb, it sounds as if you know your way around these facilities pretty well.

If I read the article right, the owner's daughter had some folks over, she thought this guy had left. Sounds like maybe it was a heck of party!

Yep. They are all around me. Also had to put a few out over the years when they burned. When the power goes out I can tell where the problem is by how many alarms I hear an from what direction. Birds were probably insured too.

Back in the day, I never went to party at one like that but I do remember others saying that they did. We went to the river to be stupid like that...
