So I've got some Blue Swedish and Ancona eggs that should be arriving any day now. I'm super excited. I have the bator hot and ready for them. Its a Little Giant styrofoam incubator that I've hatched many, many chicks in but never any ducks so I'm a little nervous. Its keeping a steady 99.7 degrees and I have a little plastic container with extra water in it (no hygrometer though..). I don't have an automatic turner but the eggs will be turned by hand 3 times a day and misted with warm water from a spray bottle to keep the humidity up.

Does this sound ok? I plan on adding a sponge in another plastic container of water for lockdown and adding water through the vent holes via an aquarium hose.

This is also my first time hatching shipped eggs so if even one hatches I will consider it a success. The eggs will be rested for 24 hours in an egg carton in the incubator before they will be turned. Unless they have ruptured air sacks then they will be left in the carton and tilted 3 times a day in the incubator.

I will be using this thread to track the progress of my eggs and hopefully, in the end, my ducklings.

Any input is greatly appreciated :)

Bravo, brave soul!

We have some seasoned duck egg hatchers here on the forum who can offer you a great deal of help. Take a peak over at the Thread formerly known as hatch day is today and check out some of the many posts. Not all of them are about hatching, but quite a number of experienced hatchers post there.

Try searching the archive . . . there are all kinds of hatching stories, successful and sorrowful, but you can learn much about it all through them.

Welcome to the threshold of Duckdom.

Thanks, will do :) I think I've got the basics down but there is always more to be learned. I'm so excited! :)

They're here! They arrived today while I was at work and my hubby was kind enough to unwrap them for me. 5 Ancona Eggs and 3 Blue Swedish eggs. Yay! One Ancona egg was cracked so I tried the "fill the crack with wax" method so we'll see how that goes. It's not pretty but hopefully it will get the job done!

I candled them (with my homemade "flashlight candler" lol) and honestly they all look very good. The air cells are even in the right places. Regardless they are resting in the incubator in an egg carton, pointy end down. Tomorrow they will be layed on their sides in there and turned 3 times a day.

I weighed them and wrote the weights down. Each egg is numbered and labeled so I know who's who. The Ancona eggs are much larger than the Blue Swedish eggs, averaging about 71 grams and the Blue Swedish eggs average about 54 grams. Is there any specific days I should look to weigh them on?

Woot! I'm so excited! :)

10/01 Notes:
A-1 No visible veins.
A-2 No visible veins.
A-3 No visible veins.
A-4 Veins developing.
A-5 Veins developing.
S-1 Veins developing.
S-2 Veins developing.
S-3 Veins developing.

The Ancona eggs are dirty so even though I can't see veins on A-1,2,&3 I'm not gonna toss them until I am sure that they are infertile/not developing.

Weight (in grams)
Egg~~~A-1~~~A-2~~~A-3~~~A-4~~~A-5~~~S-1~~~S-2~~~S-3
Date
09/26....72.8.....71.0......72.0......68.3......67.7.....55.8......53.3......53.8
10/01......71.6......69.6.....70.6......66.9......67.5.....54.6......52.6......52.8
10/05.....69.9.....67.9.....68.9......65.5......66.2.....53.3......51.7.......51.3
Note: A-5 was weighed on 09/26 before I put wax on a crack in its shell so the weight loss from 09/26 to 10/01 is not accurate.

I am watching, fascinated with hatching but I doubt I will start doing it any time soon (as in, this decade), but one never knows. Five years ago I would never have dreamed of having ducks at all.

Aww thanks for watching :) Hatching eggs is a lot of fun but it can be hard to stop once you've started LOL

Wow these little guys grow quick! On day 4 they were just a tiny little red dot with tiny little veins, just barely there. Now on day 6 they are easily 3 times bigger with much larger veins spreading all over the place. It's so much easier to see what's going on in the duck eggs than it was with my chicken eggs. It's so neat to see. I'm trying not to candle them too much, so I only candle one or two a day. I'll give them a break for a few days, I'm just sooo excited! Don't want to stress out the little babies :)

I feel so lucky that the eggs arrived in good shape and that they are ALL developing, Wow! Even the cracked one that I sealed with wax (A-5) seems to be doing just fine. It's still very early on in their "term" so I hope that things continue to do well and I end up with some ducklings :D

Wow I havent updated in a while, life sure has been busy. I have some more weightss but I'll have to put them up when I get home. Also I tossed one of the Ancona eggs as it developed a blood ring.

Anyway, these babies are late. I was very upset when they didn't hatch on time but I waited, and waited. Then finally last night after no noise or anything I quick snatched one of the Blue Swedish eggs out of the incubator and candled it. It was pipped into the aircell! WOOT! I quicked popped the little baby back in and misted with warm water.

This morning I checked on them and I hear pecking noises and the eggs are wiggling! I'm soo excited! I'll let everyone know what progress they have made when I get home :)
