Hi everyone!

I am now so grateful for this site in a way I had not forseen. This morning, (about an hour ago) a raccoon was attacking my henhouse but I scared it away. I doubt it could have gotten in anyway as we have it pretty secure but one of my hens hurt her beak in a panic.

I was reading on this site about a similar problem not 2 days ago, from the contributor Nambroth, (I think). Thank you, Nambroth for all your help!!! Sincerely.

My hen has not got a whole break but it is peeled away, see pics.

I am isolating her in a warmed cage for a few days. I decided to let her break off the piece as she seems in pain, and brushing it lightly did not remove it. Suggestions? I'll go to the store later and buy some yogurt for her.... should I try putting neosporin on the wound?

Thanks!!!

PS- she's so sweet, and I can hardly come to the computer to write this as she wants to be held constantly!

Update: She's now quiet in a isolation cage, has broken that tip off so now has a "peeled" beak. It seems to sting or hurt as she has not had any water. She tries and stops. She has eaten food. The tip looks slightly bloody and probably hurts like having your fingernail torn off?

Is this common? Someone please tell me she'll be okay in a day or two? She's really whiney right now and wants to be held all the time, poor girl.

Here is a site I found that has lots of information on chicken beaks and injuries, http://voices.yahoo.com/how-treat-broken-cracked-bird-beaks-6006908.html Here is another one. http://www.tillysnest.com/2011/12/how-to-fix-broken-beak.html

I wish you and your bird luck.

I hope these pages hep you.

Funky Chook, if you want to consult a vet or take her to someone to have a look, Dr. Pollock at Paw N Claws in Troutdale treated my injured Jersey Giant last spring and brought her back from death's door from a dog mauling. I highly recommend her and will always use her in future for my chickens. Good luck! Poor girl. That looks really painful.

Put a little super glue on it. It will seal it so the nerve(if any exposed) will be covered. It will also stop any bleeding. Sorry this happened. I have bagged a couple of coons in the past few weeks here, big ones too(male was about 40lbs).

ETA: you need to expect that raccoon to come back, it knows where a food source is. Since you live in city you'll have to trap it since you cannot discharge a firearm in PDX city limits.

Thank you for the best wishes and the info! It's helping me not become upset. Thank you so much for the recommendation! I figure if she does not drink water soon, I'll give them a call. It's helpful to know who to go to, so thank you! I have a 60w lamp on the side of a travel cage, blanket on top but not all sides so it's about 80 degrees where she's sitting... I figure the would will dry more quickly and I think she is trying to nap now. She's finally more calm because she knows I'm right next to her by the computer.

That raccoon sure scared my poor girl!

Poor, sweet little Ms. Beasley. She does a perfect imitation of an owl when she is feeling better.
