I am a new member of BYC but not new to raising and breeding chickens however this one has me stumped.

Two days ago it was like any other with both me and my silkie flock, I checked on them at around 11am before I left for work and everything was normal. When I returned home at around 1:30am I also checked on the flock except this time I found one of my 9mo old splash pullets in a squatting position on the floor of the coop, at first I thought that she was sitting on an egg so I did not pay much attention, I finished filling feeders and changing water then went back to collect the egg from the splash pullet. When I reached my hand under her she did not move and acted as if she was stuck in that position. I immediately picked her up, took her inside to evaluate her. I checked her eyes which were clear, her skin was clear, she had feces clumped in the feathers below her vent but her vent was not blocked, her vent was open and enlarged so I thought that she was egg bound. During all of this inspection she still would not move from her position in fact she only ever really moved one leg and not very much at all.

I went with the "egg bound diagnosis l, put her in an warm isolation pen with a humidifier, used a syringe with no needle to give her water I then both food and water within her reach and left her until morning.

The next morning I woke up and found her dead in the isolation pen. I removed her and went to work. Today I went to clean the isolation pen and found this laying in the bottom.

It is a half formed egg so now I am wondering if my original diagnosis was correct or if I have a bigger problem on my hands. This particular pullet was new to laying eggs and had only been doing so for about 3 weeks.

Also, it should be pointed out that I vaccinate for everything possible, I worm on a regular basis, my birds are all in heated and cooled coops, and all of the other birds appear normal and are behaving normal.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like it from the pic but either way it seems to have maybe gotten stuck n decayed, therefor causing poison to enter her blood stream. I'm so sry for ur loss :-(

Dunno if it was fertile or not, she was cooped with a roo however all of her other eggs so far have been infertile unless the 3 that I put in the incubator today turn out to be fertile then I would say that that one probably was as well. I will let you know in a few days.

I guess I am wondering if the egg is what killed her or if you think something else killed her and also caused the egg? It is possible that she laid the egg and then died or could the egg have came out after death when her muscles relaxed?

regardless of what caused her passing, I am so sorry for her and you. It's are so easy to love- it really hurts to lose them.

I'm not sure but it looks like it decayed before she laid it. To me it just looks off color n if that's the case the decay must have gotten into her system. I'm so sorry u lost her tho. I never in a million yrs would have thought I'd get so attached to chickens but I am. I love to sit outside w them n watch them eat treats n watch all thier diff personalities. I think it's great for stress n blood pressure. ;-)

Righ now I'm trying to help a lil 3.5 week old Americana. The feed store gave her to me cuz no one wanted her. She has deformed legs that are permanently bent so I've use medical comfort tape cuz she was so calloused. She eat n drinks and has such a will to live but everyone on here says I should euthanize her. I feel like if she's trying I'm gonna try to give her a good quality of life. If it should get to the point that's she's not well I'll do the deed ( my vet will). I wish there was more support for those of us who have big hearts .....

Thank you all for the condolences!
I agree that the egg probably started decaying inside her which is what killed her, this makes more sense because she was an otherwise healthy bird and her coop mates all seem fine.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause an egg to decay inside of a hen? I am concerned that the rest of my flock may be at risk. Is there a feed additive, preventive medicine, supplement or environmental change that I can make to stop this from repeating itself?

Any and all input is much welcome!

She could be dealing with internal laying. There was a good picture on here, can't find it. Sorry for your loss.
